REA Class of 2018 Applicants' Discussion Thread

The results threads would suggest that URM status confers a huge advantage. I guess we’ll all find out on Friday if that advantage will grace me this year.

@matrixsurgeon you a Hindu Indian as well?

@everyone yall are pretty much summing up what opinions are on the topic itself. I doubt its so much as a “another asian, straightup rejection, we already have 20% of class of them” but its probs that like Aigese said that there is some bias/opinion that admissions officers have in terms of asians in terms of stereotypes and waht not, whether they are true or not (not saying they are, just saying tht the stereotypes are OUT there)… and yea i hope they don’t go like this kid is indian, he better have won like research and science competitions and did math stuff every year…

URM status has historically given a very significant advantage. It won’t get anyone into a top university, but it can certainly be a tipping point.

Hahah, well I wonder how they’ll categorize me then. I’m not an URM, but I’m not entirely Asian nor entirely White.

@ orbdas

Let’s hope we find it untrue.

I tend to say it’s a correlation, not causality.We know it’s likely to occur but we don’t know the percentage, actual factors or impact.

@Keepyourshirton

:( I hope you aren’t saying that you hope it doesn’t get me in. I qualify as URM, and I hope I get in because I’m a selfish teenager, not because I’m a modern knight of affirmative action.

EDIT: I should clarify. If I am admitted, AA will not be “what got me in,” per se. Many years of very hard work and a sense of humor will be. I completely disagree with all the bitter people who tell URMs that they only got in because of the boxes they checked.

Yea as a URM i’m glad for any admissions boost, even though I’m personally against race-based affirmative action. Socioeconomic-based affirmative action would be fine imho, but thats opening a whole 'nother can of beans

@orbdas

I am just saying we don’t know anything about admission; we are inferring. You certainly don’t wanna be admitted solely because you are an URM, right? It’s still racist if they don that…

No offense intended and BEST of luck with you!

Sophus, what’s your ethnic/racial background? I’m Mexican/Caucasian.

@orbdas im not URM so I don’t know how people talk to u about college admissions, but i think that if anyone says tht URM is the SOLE or ONLY reason one got into any college, they are being stupid. sure its a factor and it helps, significantly in many cases, but it doesn’t detract away from the fact that you are qualified.

An admissions person who used to work at a respectable instituion told me that people should think of it as a “tiebreaker” almost. for all the top schools, there are easily MANY MANY qualified students that would do great and out of those, urm does help to break alot of ties but its not the reason you got in… just my .02 cents

It seems like we’re all on the same page. I wish the very best of luck to applicants of all backgrounds.

Anyone else feels like it’s racist to lump together everyone from the continent of Asia into one race? Pretty sure there are huge physiological differences between someone from Pakistan and Japan.

I’m not the person to say “ffffuu race I’m a human being,” but the entire concept is arbitrary. Like black and white are based on skin color, asian is based on region, and hispanic (officially an ethnicity, but a race in everyday usage) is based on language spoken. If you say genetically, be aware that two randomly chosen black people have more genetic variation between them than an asian and a white person.

Hearing of everyone being destroyed by IB makes me somewhat happy to have 4 tests and 2 essays to do this week.

basicspace great point!! I think that most asian people wouldn’t mind splitting into East Asia, SouthEast Asia and Islands, and Indian Subcontinent, and Western Asia…

No we wouldn’t.

@orbidas.
You’re right! It would ruin Baby Blue, but I’m not sure how the song or the ending can be considered a happy memory. To me, it’s about the reality of not getting what you want.
Just my two cents. :)

Absolutely basicspace, I agree. The problem is that in most sectors of America, Asians are underrepresented. As a result, when we label “Asians” as all in the same category, it is simply because there isn’t a lot of understanding of the different cultures and parts of Asia. It becomes mostly a grouping for the sake of first impressions. Naturally, that’s the stance that college admissions have taken as well. Unfortunately for anyone who can be considered Asian, colleges are the one place where “they” are not underrepresented.
