Reach School?

GPA 3.72 (calculus killed me)
first generation college student and immigrant
second year cc student at SMC
junior transfer
deans honor list
Scholars student - TAP certified for UCLA and LMU
PTK Honor Society
Investment club
work full time in real estate (million dollar real estate agent)
previously worked in property management company where I still possess part ownership
worked full time through high school managing and doing research for retail company
volunteer at two local shelters
Ausländschweitzer Organisation( studied politics in Switzerland summer program )

I have already applied to UCB, UCD, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, and USC.
I am planning on also applying to NYU and LMU.
However I would like to add a reach school with a killer essay. I know my GPA is not great but I think my early success and first gen makes me stand out from others. I am already doing well and school will only help me. I think there are some schools that would value these qualities.

I am essentially looking for reach school, please don’t recommend a mediocre safety school.
Do you know of any reach schools that might be interested more in me and less concerned with my GPA?
(I’m ok with low chances.)

I would like to major in business or pol sc, depending on the school’s specialty.

Emory sounds like a great option;
It’s transfer friendly and has a great business program

Looks like you already have two reach schools, UCB and UCLA, since your college GPA is around the 25th percentile for admits to business or political science at those campuses.

USC should be considered a reach too.

What % of “TAP certified for UCLA“ students get admitted? Is it quite high?

Again, not asking personal opinions on schools I’ve applied. As I stated, I wanted recommendations of other top schools that have holistic approaches to transfer applicants

Looking for “reach” schools.
Your personal approach to college application is not my concern. I have a personal approach and plan.

Claremont McKenna fits what you seem to be looking for. Transfer admit rate is in the mid teens.

“Looking for “reach” schools.

“Again, not asking personal opinions on schools I’ve applied.”

Then why are you asking us? No one is the enemy here and only trying to help. You asked for reach schools. And one of your current schools is a reach for you and wasn’t listed that way.

" As I stated, I wanted recommendations of other top schools that have holistic approaches to transfer applicants"

I do not understand why you are asking for advice on this topic here.

People here are very knowledgeable about a host of details about schools which cannot be found on school websites or websites that rank schools, but that does not seem to be the type of information you want. You want to know which colleges are reaches that use holistic approach for admitting transfers. That information is readily available on sites like USANews or Niche, and doesn’t require the type of insight that CC is so good at providing.

Look at the top 25 private colleges in your chosen field, and pick any which tickles your fancy, since almost every private school has a holistic approach to acceptance. Pick two or three to increase your chances, if you wish. No need to react so aggressively to people who are trying to help you by providing insights beyond the basic information you’re requesting.

Hey posting an update so far-

accepted: Cornell, UCSB, UCSD and LMU

waitlisted: UCLA

still waiting on USC

and waiting on Claremont McKenna!

Honestly can not believe I got in to Cornell. Glad I was not discouraged! I hope others who get (unasked for) negative feedback still apply

@MWolf @privatebanker @ucbalumnus

@Elilinden lol. I said USC should be considered a reach. Hasn’t heard back yet. And UCLA waitlist.

The others were matches and he was accepted. Which is great.

Cornell is definite reach school. That doesn’t mean impossible. So congrats. Good to see.

Not sure what your post is about?

When someone asks to determine reach schools and you tell them, that’s called honesty in most places.

Who ever said reach means no? It means yes for very few.

Transfers are especially tricky. Means they had space in your major or needed a few students.

All good news and fortunate. Now he gets the privilege to slug it out in upstate NY. Reach schools don’t always just mean it ends at the admission. It’s competitive at Cornell. He’ll do fine imho but it’s a whole new ball game.

For many colleges, transfer admission has much less information to assess reach/match/likely/safety than for frosh admission.

@privatebanker I think I could have worded this post differently. I was not asking for opinions on the schools I had applied to but rather additional schools to apply to.

@sstranfer Congrats and good luck in school.
