I am open-minded, and because of this ,I have experienced more than most people because of my willingness towards new ideas, cultures and ways of life.
This is my greatest quality because, it single-handedly explains why i take part in the activities which envelop most of my time throughout the day. I am convicted to listen to my inward reason; it is what propels me towards fluid thought. I am not restrained by ego or any outward force, my interests are governed by my reason alone. being open-minded has really solidified some of the fundamental aspects that make up me as a person. The arts( every facet of them) cope with this quality and fuel it with new ideas and direction. I am able to express my openness through melody, rhythm and structure mainly, but I find great pleasure in declaring its importance via word, either spoken, written or sung. When written my words embody poetic structure, unless written with the “automatic” method or intended to formally address a strong point of view or personal research topic. These artistic outlets are the structural basis of my persona, and what I create in these areas relates back to my liberal mindset, and my personality as a whole.
My broad outlook is what initially triggered my interest in creative writing, leading me to start reading and writing outside of school in the 7th grade. I began reading poetry by Poe, Elliot, Nietzsche and Jim Morrison , and eventually worked my way up towards Frank O’hara, William S. Burroughs , Aldous Huxley, and Carl Jung. Reading Nietzsche and Jung during that time trans-mutated my adolescent perspective, and really effected my high school educational experience. Nietzsche’s words systematically castaway every murmur of optimism in my pre-teen brain, causing my close friends to shun me, and my grades to plummet in the ninth grade.
It was only after a zen like series of self aphorisms that I realized that my optimism was my choice. Alongside reading, I started to write poetry on a daily basis, and eventually I used these poems as lyrics in my band. I had always written poetry before, but not as often, and i never thought of using it for lyrics. Only at this point did I realize the lyrical potential of poetry. I have been the lead singer in the same band since second grade, meaning that we have been together for eleven years. Comparing songs from our first album recorded in a church in the 6th grade, to recent recordings of our new songs, I can see how much the band and I personally have grown in the understanding of music. I began as a singer with little future musical intentions, and now posses a strong desire to continue on with a musical career. I now play keyboard, bass, guitar, and drums, and consume most of my free time with the practicing of these instruments. I also compose and arrange my own original music and then record it digitally into my computer and edit it with musical production soft ware. Being open minded really makes me proud because it has what caused me to be clairvoyant and experimental with music and literature. This quality has sharpened my artistic interest and made me realize what I want to do with my life.
