“David! Eight plus five.” “Thirteen!” “Good, how about sixteen minus four?” “Twelve!”

This moment at the Kumon Math center, an academic program for people of all ages, occurred on my fourth day on the job. There is no doubt that teaching gives me a deeper level of understanding of the material in my math textbooks but I never thought that teaching would be the best way to learn myself. Now, after three months, David, a 10-year-old kid is able to find “x” on an equation. Which I was taught to do in 7th grade, and I often forget how complex these ideas really are and how important they are in our everyday life. That’s why I consider teaching a math problem in itself, which tests your reasoning, creativity and persistence, and you have to do it one step at a time. Only by teaching is when I did realize that these skills maybe do not come naturally, but require extraordinary effort on the part of the teacher.
