that is about a student who had near perfect stats, like all you… and got rejected from all of their schools.

It scared me into not worrying about stanford… but worrying about my lack of safeties I will be happy with…

Moving read… please read it.

luckily I put a lot of time into my safeties and visited.

Oh yes, the legendary plight of Andi and her son.

To be honest, for a kid to get rejected from all those schools shows that there must have been something missing or negative in the application. And it’s hard to feel sorry for someone who didn’t apply to any safeties/mathes. Applying to only six schools seems to be a risky idea, especially if none of them are the state’s flagship public school or a school one is assured of entrance.

I am rather reassured, for no sober adcom will think I’m so stellar that I’m way above their league.

I’m glad I’m applying to 16 schools instead of just 6.

The above comment is one of those rationalizations that people like to throw around in an effort to assure themselves that this outcome could never REALLY happen to themselves, to their friends, or to anyone with as stellar stats and ECs as andison had.

The unfortunate fact is that this CAN happen–and for reasons completely unrelated to any “deficiency” in the applicant or the application. For every andi who has the courage and strength to take this painful story public, there are many more out there who don’t, but who most assuredly know that this type of thing can and DOES happen.

One small correction–andison applied to 8 schools, not 6. And though he had no true safeties (as he came to find out), he did have reason to believe that with a 1550 SAT, NMF status, a very high GPA and class rank, and a powerful EC, a couple of his choices SHOULD have been attainable. That was, in essence, the whole point of andi’s retelling of her tale to the new crop of applicants—that things are not as they used to be nor as they “should” be anymore and that as much planning needs to go into the safety schools as goes into the matches and reaches–maybe even more because no student should end this arduous and trying process totally unhappy should all else fail.

Andison’s outcome has been dissected in every way that it could be and in some ways that it shouldn’t have been. Andi was generous enough to return to tell the new crop of applicants about the enormously disappointing and disheartening results of her son’s application process. Heed her advice or not…it is your choice.
