Yawning can also be a sign of stress in humans. Once, when observing airborne troops about to take their first parachute jump, I noticed taht several of the soldiers were sitting in the plane and yawning. It was 10 AM, just after a coffee break, and I doubted that they were tired; i knew for a fact that they were far too nervous to be bored. When I asked about this, the officer in charge laughed and said it was really quite a common behavior, especially on the first jump.

d. Particular action was unnecessary
e. Certain behavior was unexpected

The correct answer is E, but I only can find minute evidence why it is right, and probably wouldn’t be sure that it is right on a test day. My reasoning is that the coffee break showed that they shouldn’t be tired because of lack of sleep and thus yawning. Thus its unexpected? The problem is, yawning can also be understood as unnecessary because they don’t need to yawn?

I JUST TOOK THIS PRACTICE TEST TODAY!!! LOL… I actually found this article interesting and i got that particular question right

The question directly references the coffee break not the rest of the paragraph, so after a coffee break do you think yawning is unnecessary or unexpected? The better answer is unexpected, because since coffee is a stimulant you would not expect people to be yawning then. Im not sure how else to explain it.

wow way to rub it in my face. jk. Thanks for your explaination, it helps a lot. I guess I was just thinking too hard on this one. I thought that the question asked for the coffee break’s purpose in the paragraph, to show that it was unexpected to see someone yawning after a coffee break.

The yawning WAS necessary. But it was necessary for an unexpected reason. Yawning relieves stress, as the passage suggests. We expect it to be a sign of fatigue.

ahh okay. So since the author did not know that yawning relieves stress at that time, he thought it was surprising that the soldiers yawned after a coffee break? And unnecessary is wrong because yawning has a reason, just not one that the author knew about at that time.
