reading out loud in college

Is it only possible in a single dorm?
I’m a high school senior right now, and like most people I retain knowledge more than 3 x as well if I read it out loud. At a medium to low volume of course.

And I know single dorms make that possible but, isn’t the roommate experience a big part of college?

And is there a list of colleges with single dorms?

Well to answer your question on a list of colleges with single dorms, theres WAY too many colleges with singles. You have to see for yourself when you have a list of colleges you want to apply to. Many colleges do have singles however, but it’s usually reserved for upper classmen.

Roommate experience is a big part of college life, but many people try not to deal with it. The main reason is because they don’t want to have a bad roommate and live with it for a semester or year. If they are lucky they can leave to another room, but you would have to move all your stuff once again. However, depending on your roommate I’m pretty sure it’d be fine when you read out loud to yourself. In order to make it fair between you both, allow him to do something that he may consider a nuisance to you. Of course it has to be something fair and even, nothing obnoxious.

Well, your roommate most likely won’t be around all the time, so I’m sure you’ll be able to read out loud to yourself at certain times. When your roommate is around, maybe you can just mouth the words instead. I had a roommate my freshman year, so I only read out loud to myself when I was alone. Now that I have a single, I read to myself more frequently. While I think this is a good study strategy, I don’t think it has a huge impact on learning, especially since I never read anything just once (for science classes, I usually do the assigned readings multiple times and outline each chapter). So I think it may be a bit extreme to select schools based on this factor alone. I mean, it’s not like this is the only way for you to learn. Besides, I can’t think of any school that only has singles. A good percentage of college freshmen end with roommates. I’d say that’s the most likely scenario.

I have friends who applied for a room change because they were so annoyed by their roommate reading out loud.

If you end up with a roommate, I suggest you only read to yourself when your roommate is not around. Find other spaces on campus to read out load if you have to (e.g. empty classrooms, the basement of your dorm, group study rooms in the library).

I live in a double. I share a unit with 3 other dudes. I talk outloud and read outloud- – for the reasons you mentioned.

The do think I talk to my self because of this. Who cares? You don’t need to sacrifice the beneficial experience of living with other people…a double for instance, just because you study in a way that makes it seem like you talk to yourself. If your roommates cannot respect that than they have no idea…

In most cases, your roommate will not be around all the time so you will have alone time by yourself to read out loud if you so choose. I personally wouldn’t read aloud with my roommate in my room unless he had music on or something. I’d be annoyed if that was how my roommate studied all the time because it is distracting.
