Undoubtedly, the discovery of the Sweet Track in 1970 added much to our knowledge of Neolithic techonology. But while study of the remains has revealed unexpectedly high levels of engineering and social organization, it must be remembered that the Sweet Track represents the work of a single isolated community. One must be careful not to extrapolate sweeping generalizations from the achievements of such as small sample of Neolithic humanity.

In the last paragraph, the author cautions that the Sweet Track
(A) is not as technologically advanced as is generally believed
(B) should not necessarily be regarded as representative of its time
(C) has not been studied extensively enough to support generalized conclusions
(D) is probably not the earliest road in existence
(E) will force historians to reevaluate their assuptions about the Neolithic technology

Why is the answer (B)?

the sweet track represents the work of a single ISOLATED community
not to extrapolate sweeping GENERALIZATION

basically the author is saying that sweet track is isolated so it has nothing to do with other contemporary communitites. therefore we should not generalize that other communitites have the same development. so B.

does it make sense :D

But where in B does it say that “we should not generalize that other communities have the same development” ? :P

B is an inference from what is implicitly said as I mentioned in the last post. Yeah, inference sucks. The point is, if every community is the same then the author only needs to describe one, which is, in this case, Sweet Track. So it is the ‘representative of its time’. ‘Representative’ means that it is described in this way: "Several communities, such as Sweet Track, … "

Suffice it to say the author only describes Sweet Track and not others, then he realizes that people may misunderstand he does not describe others because they are the same, so he adds the final sentences as explanation.

‘A=B=C, so I will talk about A’ is equivalent to ‘I will talk about A as the representative of A,B and C as well’.

B make sense to me too. Isolated is the key word.
