Reading Speed

On the ACT Reading test do you read as fast as you can (getting every word).

I have been stuck at a 25, but I found out that I purposely go at a slightly slower pace (So I lose all my points on the Natural Science Section (Usually <50%))
Should I be speeding up?

Columbianx, go to the act section.

No, I don’t read as fast as I can…I usually just read at my normal pace (which I faster than average). I find that if you just focus on reading rather than the time allotted then it is easier to finish your reading.

I read at my normal reading speed which is like 500 words and pulled a solid 36 on that section each time I took the ACT.

OO How much do you read OO

I don’t know about the ACT, but on the SAT I can generally pull off an effective speed of 1000 words a minute. That is, you read the questions first and then look at the paragraphs holistically to find the answers without ever really reading the passages. Tone questions can throw you off, but a few words here and there will make it pretty clear without having to read the whole thing. If you can’t answer a question, wait until the end, and read the full passage on the question you can’t get.
