So on the Real Housewives one of the daughters goes to Berkeley and she made the comment that she did not want to fit in (she is a Republican apparently) because if she did that would mean she “lived in a tree, smoked weed, or ate out of a trash can.” Is this stereotype true?? Just wondering.

it is entirely false.

stereotypes are never true, because if they were true they wouldn’t be stereotypes. true stereotypes are oxymorons

Sadly, it’s becoming more and more true. However, getting a spot in the dorms is a lot easier nowadays since more students are taking residency in People’s Park rather than the Units. Once you get over the unavoidable stench of weed and trash, Berkeley is not that bad of a place.

Yes, it’s totally true. I’m currently living in a tree right now (a tree with internet access, mind you). My roommates are a squirrel named Chubbycheeks and a crow called Emo. And I am always smoking weeds; I just light a fire down wind of a colony of weeds and try to smoke it out of the ground. I also eat out of trash cans all the time. My favorite type of trash are shoes; they have such a great leathery and chewy texture. Words fail at describing their wonderous flavour. Truly the creme de la creme of fine cuisine.

So here’s my question: Your location indicates that you go to school in Virginia so does everyone there talk like a hillbilly, eat roadkill, and wear overalls and straw hats everywhere they go? Just wondering.

That’s West Virginia.

Also, you may want to look into subtlety and its relation to humor.

I’m sorry for being demographically incorrect and giving the false pretense of subtlety in an attempt at tongue-in-cheek humor. But you know, with the internet, its hard to get your point across without overt exaggeration and emphasis, which, by the way, is something you demonstrated very well with your displeasure and affront. I doff my cap to you.

…I obviously don’t think the stereotype is 100% true but I thought you all would enjoy commenting on it - I was surprised there wasn’t already a thread about it when I searched. I was just wondering how prevalent those things are for it to be a stereotype.

A surprising number of professors have drawls here. I’m a math major, and instead of “integrate” the term is " summin’ " - not even lying. Sadly, no one wears straw hats here, but I think it would be a pretty funny fad to start.

You should also look into overcompensation, apparently.

hazelorb:

That must make math class so interesting! My math prof is Danish and he also has a drawl. It’s a very interesting drawl and he likes to say “Ja”. Lol, I see some people here wearing straw hats every once in a while and it’s pretty amusing. What’s really amusing is that one of my floormates actually attended a genuine hoedown (well, not really genuine, but pretty close) run by some school club.

Ektaylor:

You’re right. I should. You win. Happy?

Not really.

That girl is in my Poli Sci class. I’m also from the OC so I am familiar with that show. Everyone on that show was stupid, crazy, obnoxious, and most of all, completely out of touch with reality considering they live in the rich OC bubble. So, don’t believe anything she says. It’s just a stereotype. It is FAR from the truth.

what’s her name?

Don’t know but she’s hot.

I got a laugh out of it too. My first (and only) time ever seeing it and I hit that episode.

[Kara Keough - Real Housewives of Orange County - Truveo Video Search](http://www.truveo.com/Kara-Keough-Real-Housewives-of-Orange-County/id/4070608586)

Kara Keough

On a random side note, whenever I am in Orange County I get a chill through my spine.

itsaclassic: you probably shouldn’t say that you’re from orange county :P

drill_scout, say sup to Dumpster Muffin for me.

Watch any 30 second promo for Real Housewives and you’ll find them as vapid as hamsters.

The girl is probably just as dumb as her mother. Just because you can get into Cal doesn’t
mean you have common sense.

Yeah… Her personal statement must have been the deciding factor in her acceptance.

I searched da interweb for an excerpt:

“Starring on a reality show has helped me define myself as a person. Watching repeatedly the countless clips of all of the overly dramatic moments in my life has allowed for an objective critique of my very essence, revealing my true caliber as an individual, my gravitas… So, like, let me in. Okay, fer sher, L8z!”

Post #2 is incorrect. Stereotypes are often true, they are only typicalizations, not generalizations, in most instances. But the descriptions provided in Post #1 are ludicrous.
