You know this is from The Onion right? This is in fact not real life.
I guess, having few drinks with your buddy is a “real life” for some prospective college students. I hope that he will wake up sooner rather than later.
Just to reiterate what @maya54 said in case someone reads the article and doesn’t notice or is unfamiliar withe the source–it’s The Onion which is a **satirical site. **. So let’s not treat this as a real story.
That said, pretty funny and unfortunately may have an element of truth.
Fortunately most colleges will do the job regardless of the reasons one chooses them. I missed the Onion origin- knowing the source it makes it even more fun to read.
I didn’t miss the origin. The source doesn’t mean it doesn’t have a kernel of truth. That’s part of what makes good satire work.
Gotta love The Onion.
The joke is that there’s an element of truth to it, like there is in all good satirical pieces. Satire is simply using hyperbole or humor to make fun of actual societal problems/issues.
It’s not like there aren’t college students that make decisions like this.

A friend had a similar experience. Kid had been accepted to a number of high end LAC’s, and made a decision to attend one in the northeast. He told the school she was coming. However, the kid also got into a California LAC, and went there for the accepted students day just for a free trip to LA. Kid ended up committing to the LA LAC because a student produced skit “touched her heart” and “she could really see herself fitting in.”
3--All too often The Onion captures the real life people like to avoid admitting. That's their genius.
Our neighbor’s kid decided to attend USC because a girl with blonde hair drove by on a bicycle during the campus tour.

Love the Onion. This article is so true and why should a scenario like this be a concern? Fit and feeling you belong are important elements in a college search. Learning to trust our guts and/or instincts is an increasingly lost art. And since one can achieve virtually any goal after attending virtually any college (or not attending college for that matter), ultimately, why would it matter if the student changed his mind after a number of very positive experiences during a college visit? Oh, the horrors!
True story - in the Spring of 1980, as I was considering where to attend college, I flew to Texas to visit a school I had barely heard of. Was picked up at DFW airport by a great guy, who was driving a friend’s beat up Toyota Corolla. He reached into a cooler behind his seat, handed me a cold beer and we drove back to campus.
Had a great weekend, sat in on a class or 2, met some great people and attended one heck of a dorm party.
I graduated from that school 4 years later and that guy was my RA freshman year. He is a doctor today and a fantastic human being. One of the best decisions I ever made, and I made it because the school felt right and I felt I belonged. I made it because of the people I met. To those who would suggest this was a silly decision made by an immature 18 year - you may be right, but I not only survived, but thrived. I would not change a thing. I declined acceptances from 2 schools on CC’s “top list”. People would think I was completely crazy for making the decision I did.
For those who are are wondering - I was 18 at the time and could legally drink. And in Texas at the time, you could legally have open containers in a car and have people drinking - as long as the driver was not legally drunk. So - no laws were broken during the telling of this true story.
This story resonates with me, because I see myself…oh so many years ago.
