Realistic Essay Prompts?

My friend takes SAT prep classes at the ACI Institute in SoCal. Today, she had me read over 2 of her essays. I thought that the prompts were rather obscure and much more difficult than any real prompt.

Anyway, here are the 2 prompts (shortened very much and paraphrased just a bit):

How is progress and control similar to the power of communication?

To what extent can people with disadvantages overcome their difficulties?

Thoughts? Comments? Personally, I feel that if I saw essay #1 on the real SAT, I’d start crying on the spot. Essay #2, not so much, but it’d still be bad.

The essay is just a drain of energy for me. If i had anything like the first prompt, I would have gotten up and left the test. Wasn’t there some thread about how to score a 12 in 10 days… referring to essays or something. I can’t find that damn thread!..

Not sure about the second one, but the first one is a paraphrase of an essay prompt from a real test.

Source: I work at ACI and wrote the prompt in question, paraphrasing from a real test prompt.
