Realistic Estimate of Chances

Hello! I applied through SCEA to Yale, which is my top choice for undergraduate education.

I am a female, caucasian student living on the West coast. I attend a religious, private school which has a rigorous curriculum. I am an International Baccalaureate Full Diploma Candidate. Technically, my school doesn’t rank (and thus, I cannot put this as an attribute on my application), but I am currently the top student out of approximately 400 students.

I hope to study International Studies with Journalism or Global Health and Health Policy. :)

My unweighted GPA is 3.98, and my weighted GPA is 4.83 (besides required religion courses, every other class I took was AP/IB/honors). I have taken some unique classes, such as philosophy, Latin, and Greek (all of which I absolutely adored!).

I received a 35 on the ACT, 5 on AP English Language, and a 4 on AP Biology. (Most of my IB courses are Higher Level [2 year duration], or Standard Level [1 year duration] but preceded by Honors-level course, so the bulk of my testing is at the end of senior year unfortunately.) I never took the SAT I, but I have SAT II test scores (690 on Bio, 700 on Math 2, and 740 on Literature). I emailed my admissions officer, and he said that my SAT IIs were not required since I submitted the ACT, and thus I never sent them in since I know my scores are not a strong suit. I received National Merit Selection-Index Qualifier status, but was not selected as a semi-finalist.

I’m Secretary-General of my school’s MUN program (12th grade) and I was Secretary-General of our conference (11th grade). I’ve traveled worldwide for MUN and asked my advisor write one of my recommendations.

I’m also involved in Mock Trial as a pre-trial attorney (11th/12th grade), and defense attorney (10th grade). I currently am Editor of our school’s literary club which compiles an annual publication of student work and hosts writer lecture series with well-know slam poets from across the nation; I’ve been involved with this club since 9th grade. I absolutely adore reading and writing. I was elected Class Vice-President for 9th and 10th grade, and helped to organize rallies, spirit activities, etc. I also am involved with an anti-child trafficking club on campus that hosts bake sales, car washes, and awareness campaigns to raise money for an organization. I served as Vice-President in 10th and 11th grade, and currently serve as President. I’m involved in the local chapter of the World Affairs Council, as well as received a certificate of congressional recognition for my involvement in their competition.

I’ve done community outreach through my church, especially in teaching Sunday School, acting as a page in a national church political session, and assisting at my local assisted-living facility. I also tutor on a weekly basis through National Honor Society. I am part of my state’s Scholastic Federation. I served as a student representative on the Academic team for my school’s WASC accreditation.

I’ve received numerous MUN awards; I’ve received two awards for achievement in my classes; and I’ve been selected as the top MUN-er in my grade (10th grade).

I wrote my essays on LGBT rights, growing up with a mentally-ill sister, and an international trip I went on through a scholarship.

My interview went fairly well, with my interviewer feeling confident that I matched Yale’s profile.

I’ll be quite honest; I am really content with my high school accomplishments, since I pursued my passions and developed meaningful relationships with teachers and peers. I am fortunate that I still had immense opportunities for fun and exploration, despite a rigorous course load. I know I will end up at a great college, even if it is not Yale. I am trying to trust the Admission process and that Yale will pick the best students for its class. I earnestly hope that every wonderful person on these boards gets the opportunity to be a Yalie. :)

Yet, I can’t help but be anxious with the limited scope of time until admission decisions are released on December 15th. I feel so antsy, and I just found College Confidential (which probably doesn’t help with the nervousness) and I was amazed at the talent and abilities of all of the people on the boards.

I would very much appreciate a realistic estimate of my chance at getting into Yale. I know none of us can know for sure, and the best bet is to follow your passions with great vigor, but I can’t help but be curious…

Thank you so much! :)
