Realistic Transfer Options

Hi everyone, I am a current college freshman looking to transfer for the fall of 2017 for various reasons. The only problem is that I screwed up my first semester and now don’t know if messed up my transfer options. It would be nice if people can post potential options that I have considering my situation. Some basic stats are posted below

Current College: Top 5 LAC (U.S. News)
College GPA: 3.09 (I know)
Major: Mathematics

High School
GPA: 3.7ish unweighted
SAT: 1580/2290
SAT II: 3 750+
ACT: 34
APs: 8 5+4s

Any sort of advice/help/comment would be appreciated. What kind of schools are in reach?
Thanks

Hey so

  1. If you could provide a little context regarding why you want to transfer, that might help people recommend schools.
  2. Remember transfer acceptance rates are different than freshman admit rates, and the way you can figure out this information is by finding the “common data set” for a college.

^ I would like to transfer because I feel like the school I’m attending is a little too small and stifling. Additionally I am currently situated in a very rural area and would like to be closer to urban areas. Also I’m tentatively thinking about engineering and my current school does not offer that.

Given your current GPA, might it be better to try to get it up a little bit, and then apply to transfer during the winter of next year? Otherwise your options will much less prestigious than your current school.

^Thanks for the input I will consider that. Do you think it’s possible to be able to get in a school like UMish/USC/GTech? Or are those reaches.

Honestly, I’m not knowledgeable enough to make calls like that, BUT I can recommend you take a look at transfer common data sets.

For example, USC has a freshman admit rate of ~16.5%.

According to their common data set (section D) they have a transfer admit rate of around 30.3%.
Generally speaking, that means your chances are a bit better as a transfer student for USC, but keep in mind they don’t provide any statistics about how competitive the transfer students are. I’m sure that their admitted transfer student is around as competitive as their freshman admits.

I imagine if you’re taking general education classes for a mathematics degree it’ll be a pretty decent balance of humanities and mathematics classes which would probably transfer over reasonably well for an engineering degree. Either way, do some research about the common data sets of schools you’re interested in, and consider whether you should wait until fall of 2017 to submit applications.

Can’t edit my last post but keep in mind different schools have different requirements for transfer students. Some want you to take at least 12 units, some want you to take at least 30 units, etc. as a first semester freshman you might not even qualify yet.

^ Thanks for your thoughtful post. I’ve realized as a first sem. freshman with 12 units I cannot transfer to UC schools and some notable others.

Bump

Hello there! I really need to know what my chances are. I want to transfer to University of Florida. They only require me to have 60 transferable credits, which I have, or an AA that ill be getting by late April. I have no idea how difficult it could get to get into their Geology Bachelors degree program, but I have completed all their prerequidites and my GPA is not bad at all. I finished high school in Cuba, so If accepeted ill have to get through an interview process in Spanish to meet the foreign language competency, not a big deal.
Major: Geology BS at the College of Liberal Arts and Science (CLAS)
Overall GPA: 3.93
Pre-requisites GPA: 4.0
Term applied: Fall 2017

Please let me know what you guys thing. they have the best Geology program in the state.

Good luck to you all!
