Would current students comment on the freshmen dorms?

As I understand it, AMR has standard rooms with shared bathroom that is cleaned by staff. A/B have suites with bathrooms that students are responsible for cleaning.

Personally, I can’t believe 4 boys would have any interest in cleaning a bathroom with any regularity and can imagine that it would become unpleasant in pretty short order. Therefore, I am suggesting that the standard rooms would be a better option. Son, who is reasonably fastidious, seems to think that it would not be a problem, and that he would clean it if no one else did (he does not do this chore at home). This, I suspect, would become very old very quickly.

So what are the realities of kids living in suites as far as the cleaning situation goes?

It really varies from room to room. As a former male resident of Building A, I can tell you that there were some suites of guys that kept up with the cleaning and others that definitely did not. My suitemates and I were pretty good about keeping clean - I had a little $10 Target vacuum and my suitemate had a swiffer, which made everything a lot easier. As long as your son sets a routine for cleaning, he should be fine. That said, the Residential Life people do “Health and Safety” checks and there were definitely suites that were told that they had to clean their bathroom immediately as it was a “health and safety hazard”.

You fill out some form where you list your preferences in order (such as whether you want a single/double/triple, and what building you want). They try to match you based on preferences and usually people get what they want in one of those aspects. I think they also ask if number of people or building is more important. For example, I asked for a single in Building A/B, but said that the single was more important. Result: I got a single in AMR 1.

Last year, I was in McCoy (similar to Building A/B and Wolman) and I was the only one who cleaned the bathroom. I wasn’t happy about it, but it took less than 5 minutes.

I live in Wolman this year, and I’ll give you some tips if you want to live there next semester.

Don’t bring a fridge - it’s included

Bring a microwave

Bring a vacuum - infinitely useful

Don’t bring too much toilet paper - they supply you every week

Bring an iron

Bring a printer

Bring some sort of Tempur-pedic -> the beds are pretty hard

Bring a pan perhaps, depending if you want to cook

People have misconceptions about Wolman, thinking it’s pretty antisocial, but it’s the opposite. It is, in my opinion, more social than AMR’s and Building A/B
