One of my short essays is really long(550 words). I cut just about everything there is to it(originally 620). It’s really good and I don’t want to throw it away. It was supposed to be my long essay but I found a better topic for that. What to do? Will this be too excessive?

It has to fit in the space they provide on the form, so you’ll have to shorten it, or write a new one.

Agrophobic,

I have a similar problem. I got a really cool idea for the intellectual interests short essay, wrote a lot, and now I have a 490-word essay. Figure out what is irrelevant or what can be phrased more concisely (I know you’ve done this already, but try again), then I guess you could shrink your font and margins if you use the paper app.

It can be done. I took essays that were ca. 500 words and only used parts for the short essays.
The other thing to consider for common app schools is that the common app lets you post limitless amounts of text into the short essay boxes, so that you can abuse that!

rewrite it from scratch, but keep the same ideas, you will not be able to shorten it by such an extent while keeping the essay as a whole coherent. I’d suggest start a new but with the same basic idea as the original essay get the “gist” of the old essay, you can even copy/past some lines to the new one
