Really, really bad haircut. Seriously.

TooRealistic: Hopefully, I have found a stylist I can work with and won’t need to feel bad about paying her my haircuts. If, God forbid, I do get another really bad cut, I’ll try to take courage from your example. Don’t know why I am such a coward when it comes to refusing to pay for a bad haircut. I’m usually great at asserting my rights. I guess it’s that first response of denial at what has just happened to my head. Sounds like I’m not alone, but things have to change - at least for me.

By lots of makeup I meant that I will use eyeliner every morning instead of just mascara (which sometimes happens when I’m in a rush) and lipstick. I’ll also pay special attention to my blush to try to accent my high cheekbones (the only redeeming feature on my face) - anything to draw attention away from the hair. Big earrings just might be the ticket, too. Perhaps with the right shape and length, they can help soften my jawline and draw attention away from the top of my head.

colmomto - I was at work when I read this thread. I was laughing so hard, at your expense I am afraid, but I also felt really bad because I am a bit psycho about my hair. I have very straight hair. Most people think it’s easy to have a very straight blunt cut, but it’s not. There is no room for mistake. My hairdresser would usally spend over half an hour just to make sure it’s perfectly straight. I’ll shake my head, bend forward, backward, sideways to make sure there is not one strain of hair sticking out. I have been with my hairdresser for over 25 years.

So happy you got it fixed. You are a good sport to share this. Made my day.

You guys are making me feel less cheap for my usual haircut - a just below the shoulder length straight bob with a bit of an undercut… back cut by DH about every 4 months, (who is very patient, and pretty good) sides cut by myself. They taper up to about chin length. Highlights from a LOreal kit that has haircolor and highlights in one box. Not cutting edge 30 something New York hair, but also not $190 per haircut and another $190 for color… and I haven’t had a makes-me-cry-to-pay-for-this-terrible mid-price $80 haircut in years.
Plus much of the time it’s just up in a pony because I live where it’s sweaty hot!

I started with my hairdresser when she was charging $25/cut. She is now charging me $45/cut. She has seen my girls when they were new borns. I have gone through her parents death, her daughter’s marriage and child birth. We are like old friends now.

My girls go to one of those well known hairdressers in NYC. Their hair cut cost 3 times of my cut. He is really good. He has asked if he could cut my hair. I have said no out of loyalty (it would be like cheating on my husband).

oldfort: You are very, very lucky. I have searched for years for a stylist who can work with my baby fine hair. It has no lift and seems to challenge each and every stylist I’ve been to over the years. My long forehead is also a challenge. I’m too old for heavy bangs and my forehead is too wrinkled for no bangs at all. For some reason stylists ignore my request for wispy bangs and give me either no bangs or thick bangs. Why they can’t just cut the wispy bangs is beyond me. It seems like such a simple request. Hopefully, this new stylist is the answer to my prayers. Maybe I needed the disasterous Moe Cut to find her.

Oh, you poor thing. I’m glad to hear that you got the redo. It will grow before you know it. Years ago I was much more adventurous in the haircut department and would try out many different styles. The worst is still legend in my family. Don’t know what the person was thinking - it was longer in front and like a lawnmower ran over my head in the back! It still brings back bad memories over 20 years later!

Any chance a hairband would help?

You have my sympathy! Last spring I got a haircut that made me look like Thomas Jefferson! I tried everything to make it better ended up going to and upscale salon for a correction cut - cost a fortune and was much better but still a little difficult, now that its grown out a while I will start to look for a new stylist and that’s no fun at all. I just want my old hair back.

colmomto2,

Been there, done that. My Herman Munster catastrophe happened when my hair stylist was experiencing personal trauma with her son. I was growing out a shoulder length layered bob, and ended up with a short ■■■■■ do, with Mamie Eisenhower bangs. It was as unflattering a look as I could get, and I was in my 20’s. It wasn’t a hairstyle for a young woman.

I should have known better. It was near Halloween, and I actually shopped for wigs at the party store. It was a horrific time and there was not enough hair gel in the world to make it better.

I never went back to her - and she knows why. Unfortunately, she is a well-regarded stylist, has her own salon and is a relative. I actually thought once I got home and restyled it, I could try to make it work. Nope. She thought it was “cute”. I haven’t trusted her with my hair, or children, ever since. ;)

Hunt:

ROFLMAO!!!

…and cheers to colmomto2 for being a good sport.

srw, I don’t know, this hairdo could work for some people…

This all reminds me of my H. When we were both single decades back, I had just come home from law school & was desparately searching for a decent stylist for an OK haircut. I got one odd/horrid cut after another and was about at my wit’s end. I got an afro as well (tho I requested just a soft, body wave), a got a severe Moe cut, and a bunch of other indescribable cuts all of which were so nasty. Hubby was afraid I was a cynical divorcee because I had such bizarre hair but I finally got a halfway decent cut after I had known him about a year & we started talking & the rest is history.

I have now been to the same stylist most of the past 27 years, including having her cut my kids’ hair. She was the ONLY stylist my S would trust & is still one of the few he trusts (she could cut his hair in 5 minutes back when he was a toddler & wouldn’t sit still).

A great stylist is indeed priceless. For a while, she charged the 3 of us $22 altogether for all of us to cut our hear–S, D & me! She’s increased her prices but is still well below just about everywhere and SO nice & good!

I sure hope your new stylist works out – it does sound promising!

Not to beat a dead horse (or a dead Moe for that matter)

^ ROLF! And there was a pic of the disaster I was given too…turning me into a mutant Northern European blond female Jimi Hendrix. The court jester mess takes the cake though.

A few years ago I had a lunch set up in a town a couple of hours away, with my HS prom date who would be there on business. I happened to get my haircut at a new place the day before…the cut was fine, but it was an inch or so too short, adding that to the extra 20# I was sporting and I could have passed for a downtown San Francisco militant lesbian. It was way too much face and not enough hair. Hmmm, have i emailed with him since?? ;)

But my hair did grow back and I have had a few cuts since then that were too short, what is it about some stylists who don’t realise that the hair will shrink when it dries? When your hair is only 2 inches long, every little bit counts

Regarding the don’t judge my hair link, I seen pictures of my husband that looked an
awful lot like the last guy!

I was getting my hair cut the other day and was watching someone get 6 or 8 inches of hair cut off. I remarked to my stylist that the person getting so much hair cut off seemed so calm. He laughed and told me that she was having extensions removed. Now there’s a thought!

olmomto2: please refer us to a photo of Faith Hill that was the inspiration for your new cut.

Oldfort: My older D would love to get a nice new hairdo-cut by someone who really knew what they were doing…think “What Not to Wear” make over. In fact, D2 and I were discussing how D1 would be a good candidate for the show.

Dang - I was smiling at this thread, then laughing at those Don’t Judge My Hair:Epic Hairstyles - and then I came to “the 70’s were so Fun(gi)” hairdo - Hey! I had that hairdo through part of my freshman year at college! I thought it looked GOOD! (My randomly-assigned roommate kept trying to get me to “mess it up” just a little bit. She had a lot more fashion sense than I did.)

Glad the OPs hair turned out ok for now - and bad haircuts do grow out pretty quickly…

ellemenope: See oldfort’s post #29 on this thread. How I ended up looking like Herman Munster with Moe’s hair I’ll never know.

I was able to style my hair this morning which was a joy. It’s a funky style, but with careful makeup and dangling heart-shaped earrings I managed to feel confident today. At least, I felt like I could pull off the “Yes, this is the newest style. Don’t I look fabulous?” swagger. After it grows out, I’ll see if this new stylist can shape it into what I’m looking for. We’ll see . . .

Colmomto2…back to being a hottie.
