Really tall son - where do you shop?

My middle son is 6’7". Hopefully he’s done growing…
Anyway, I pretty much buy all his clothes over the internet. The hardest thing to find is shorts that are long enough. I can get the 36 length pants and jeans, but all the shorts seem to end above his knees, which is not the current style.

Does anyone know of a good source for YOUNG men’s big/tall clothes?

S1 is 6’5" and weighs about 145. We have found that any store that sells big/tall really means BIG and tall. Finding tall and thin is really difficult. Like you we have luck with jeans and basic pants (Lands End and LL Bean are good sources), but shorts are tough. If they hit his knees he thinks he hit the jackpot. He usually tries on about twenty pairs of shorts for everyone he buys.

Has anyone ever tired <a href=“Made To Measure Custom Jeans For Men & Women, MakeYourOwnJeans®”>www.makeyourjeans.com? Their prices look pretty good, I just never have been able to get S1 to stand still long enough to measure him.

J C Penny has a tall department that’s good for t-shirts and shorts.

J.C. Penney here too. Also Land’s End carries Tall clothes which usually fit. Shorts are a problem, but I can usually find cargo shorts that are long enough for him at Sears and Penney’s.

He has a long torso so he loves the Tall undershirts and Long ties (when he HAS to dress up) at Penney’s. They also carry XL socks for his size 14 feet.

Penny’s is good for big and tall, but most of their tall stuff starts at a 40 -42 waist. So while t-shirts are long enough, they kind of hang on a skinny guy. Pants are harder, since most big and tall stores start at about a 40 inch waist. S1 thinks it is a sad comment on America that you can by 52-30 pants in Target, but you can’t buy 30-36’s.

I remember finally finding a quiksilver bathing suit (board shorts style) with a 14(?) inseam.
Paid $52 (AAAACK) but it was worth it - he loves them.

I just keep telling him he has to make $$$ so he can order custom clothes.
I feel for you guys with the tall/slim boys - mine is extra tall, but also big (in pictures, he just looks like he’s over-size - like he’s standing closer to the camera than everyone else!) so IF they carry the long, long length, they usually have it in his waist size.

He’s got LONG legs, and shorts are really the issue - We live in Florida, so it’s year-round apparel.

PS - I’m 5’10", and he now finds it fun to greet me with a kiss on the top of my head. And I’m standing up straight!

I buy most of his pants and jeans at JC Penneys online.

Sons are 6’6" and thin (especially the younger one). As others have said, LL Bean. Also older son likes Brooks Brothers stuff. Jos. A. Bank for suits.

I agree that it’s hard to find narrow and tall. We find that Lands End and LL Bean fit somewhat baggy. Gap and Old Navy carry some nice tall men’s polos and button-downs that are adequate, but not super-long. I’ve noticed that the smaller waist sizes in the longer inseam jeans tend to be the first to sell out. I think there are a lot of tall skinny teenagers out there needing clothes!

Also - look for sites that sell pants unfinished. Lands End lets you order a lot to your exact inseam, but there’s still the problem with finding a small enough waist.
H is 6’7 and bought some clothes at a place called Rochester Big and Tall, but I was shocked by their prices when their catalog arrived in the mail.

Thanks for the heads-up on JC Penney!

lspf72, good idea about the unfinished inseams. Bills Khakis has unfinished pants (I think with waist as small as 30). They are not cheap but are very durable so seem to last quite awhile.

Thanks for the heads-up on unhemmed shorts - I have a sewing machine, and I can do the hemming. In fact, I was tempted to find a pattern that was the current style, and just make him a pair of shorts. Even though I am way out of practice.

The good news is that he embraces the tall thing, and just grins at the same comments over - and over - and over again…

No, he doesn’t play basketball. :-)

Browse for shorts at Zappos.
Lots of long options.
Some are pricey though…

Just glanced at Old Navy online - 32" waist gets you a 36" inseam in lots of pant and jean style but no “long” in the shorts styles. But - they go up to the xxxl in waist size! Guess we know whether more kids are beanpoles or fireplugs!

Tell me about it! Dhubby STILL doesn’t have a suit. 6’6"or 6’7" and about 155 lbs. The guys at Men’s Warehouse just shook their heads and said, “Noone makes a suit to fit him.” He needs a 39 XL. I’ve been online all over and haven’t found a suit anywhere at that size. We figure that one day we’ll have to go to China or whereever it is that one goes for inexpensive custom suits… Big and Tall definitely means “Big AND Tall” or just plain “BIG”. If I had any desire to go into business, I’d start a “Tall and Skinny” shop.

Darn :frowning: I was all excited about the Jos.A Bank suits - but they only carry xlong in 44 or larger… darn…

Just sticking my nose in to say, take SOME solace in the fact that your sons actually LIKE pants that fit at or near the waist. My son goes for the pants that seem to float miraculously at the bottom of his bottom.

Shrinkrap, S1 has worn a belt since he was about 3, even with shorts. He hates having his pants down around his bottom. Maybe because that’s where they all hit him if he doesn’t wear the belt. Other problem with a tall skinny kid is that they seem to lose weight faster then anyone else. S1 was so proud this summer when he left for school - he was up to 150!! Came home at Christmas down around 135. Took him to the Doctor for a physical - Doctor says he’s perfectly healthy, just skinny! Why can’t I take after him???

Anxiousmom – we’ll be your best customer!!

I’ve also bought pants and cut them off and hemmed for shorts.

anxiousmom, You might want to call or go into a JOs.A. Bank in person to see if they can help you. Older son is 36 waist , younger son is 34 waist. Son has gotten a couple of suits from them and they were very helpful in getting the best fit. He bought the suit, they do some alterations and then you pick it up a few days later. Bought one suit in Charlottesville and one in Pittsburgh but I believe there are JOs.A. Bank stores all over. The staff in both stores were very friendly and helpful. If they can’t help, they might be able to point you in another direction.

Shrinkrap- Maybe it is a Ca thing. My son is 19 and he still is wearing his pants low. Drives me insane. If he didn’t have boxers on I would swear I would see his entire bottom.
