Is it advisable in Yale to reapply the next year, after being rejected on the first attempt? Do adcoms refer to the past admission forms to chart your development?

I am going into national service, so I would have two years to slog over my forms. However, I want to get it over with this year, with just one college application. =) My portfolio would be nicer next year, with the addition of probably 2 Community involvement projects and 1 research attachments, along with my army experience. Having said so, it wouldn’t be as drastically different from those who do get an entire gap year off.

The two students I know who were rejected and reapplied after a gap year were both rejected again. I’d recommend concentrating your efforts on different schools that are a better match for your statistics.

I took a gap year off after being rejected from Yale. I was an international student, and lived in japan. After receiving my rejection, I got a job at a multi-national restaurant chain as a marketing associate. After 6 months, I got an offer tour Korea as a motivational speaker for young people, and made several recordings of my speeches, which sold in the tens of thousands in Korea. And in succeedingly, I got a position as a production/tour manager for an acapella group at Yale, and made about $18,000 in two weeks.

But all in all, when I applied after my gap year, I was rejected again. So, unless you find a cure for AIDS or singlehandedly solve poverty in Africa, the chances are low.

Didn’t you get into any other schools this year? If you did, you would have been better off going one of those schools than taking a gap year.

But it’s too late for that, so when you’re applying to Yale next year, apply to some other schools too. There are many colleges out there, and one, or even a bunch, may turn out to be a better fit for you than Yale is.

Luckily, I haven’t applied yet. I am studying for my GCSE A levels now. I really hope to get over this application business early. Guess I should patient though. =(
