My counselor recently called Rice to ask about sending in my transcript which has been delayed by technical problems at my school. The admissions person first told him that they were very interested in me as a candidate. Then it was explained that I was deferred solely because they “did not know where i would fit.” Otherwise, they said that my updated transcript and any other information was not necessary. However, i did just send in an updated resume

I applied for the engineering college with a focus on EE,ME, or statistics. However, i have a wide range of extracurriculars, including biological research, sports, government, and volunteering.

Does anyone have an idea what “fit” means? Or has anyone heard information about their deferral status after receiving the notice?

im not sure…but i would think that they already have someone in next year’s freshman class very similar to you…well, your ECs, academic ability, writing ability, etc. I’m probably wrong…but that’s just what i think. good luck, though!

Too well-rounded maybe? That is, “fit” might have meant they were looking for a narrow category to put you in (like left-handed cellists from single parent families), and couldn’t find one in your application. Exaggeration, of course, and I don’t have any special insight into Rice’s admit decisions. But if you have a sharp interest or “passion” that didn’t come across in your application, you might check with your counselor to see what you can do to get it across to Rice.

The schools all seem to be getting so many highly qualified applicants, they have to defer or deny a ton of people who clearly could be successful in their programs. Good luck with Rice and your other choices.

however, my counselor essentially said that he believed i was certainly “in.” I’m wondering if there is any reason the admissions person would suggest that my file (which does not include an expanded resume) does not need any updating. That seems unreasonable if they really wish to see a certain side of me.

that’s really fast, because they said that if you want to send in an update, you’ll have to get it in by March 1, - so they just zipped through the deferral pile that quickly?

yep, apparently. as far as i heard, they met once on the deferral pile between the 1st and the 7th. i’m just hoping that my updated material made it in on time.

also, i noticed that they stopped updating the admissions status online. the last update was feb 27th or so.

Are you sure that they sent out decisions for deferred people? I was deferred and I checked my status online and they say that it was last updated March 6th but the decision still says “application deferred to regular decision.” Aaaahhh! I am freaking out.

I don’t know if I believe that about the March 1-7 thing. I talked to a counselor, and she told me that you could send updates during march. A week before April might be cutting a little close though. I thought we get our decisions at the same time as the RD students? Which would mean April 1.

Yeah, that’s what I thought too but I could be wrong. Stanford_dude, when was your online status last updated? My friends who applied RD had their status last updated sometime in February and mine was updated March 6th. Maybe there’s a trend.

I’m not sure what the online updating really means.

I’m guessing that my counselor left of some details when explaing his call to admissions. Possibly, they met on deferred candidates and made decisions, but they are keeping the letters to send off along with RD. That is just my guess.

has any other deferred candidate spoken with admissions?

I just checked. The last time my d’s was updated was in early March. I just sent some copies of her recent accomplishments last week that I expected to arrive early this week. They must have arrived yesterday because now it reads March 13th. I think that whenever they add new information, the date it was logged in is recorded. For instance, a conversation with a counselor would be logged in and the date would be recorded.
