Does anyone know why Rice asks for the schools we applied to? Anyone ever see a correlation?

It’s simply to figure out what kind of cross applicant you are. It does not affect your admission at all.

chortle chortle

Other schools, not just Rice, also ask this question as well.

If nothing else, it’s useful as a marketing tool. It tells them a bit about how they’re perceived by potential students, particularly when correlated against applicant locations.

I think part of it’s to see whether Rice is a reach school for you or not…and whether they should give you merit aid to lure you away from Ivies, if you applied to Ivies.

There’s nothing to say you need to be completely honest about every single school you applied to. I know it sounds weird but I only listed a few schools I applied to, most of which were on the same level as Rice (with a few Ivies thrown in there) and things worked out, admissions-wise and finances-wise.

^^^it’s all a game, isn’t it? When S completed his Rice app, he was reluctant to put down higher-reach schools, like an ivy, and his safeties…He didn’t want to be waitlisted becuase of the schools on his list. He also wasn’t exactly clear about where he was applying.

Still, that question to list all the other schools just begs for the applicant to question WHY are you asking

So does it affect admission?

I don’t think it affects admission at all. It might have an impact in whether Rice decides to offer merit aid, though.
