Hey Guys,

I’ve been living Singapore for the past 3 years, but still maintain my california residency, and would like to go to a UC if possible

anyhow, been reading this forum and my goodness…FULL OF BRILLIANT OVERACHIEVERS!! average simply sucks donkey here lol, that said, it seems like hooks are EXTREMELY important in ensuring your application is looked at thoroughly. I seem to be a bit dry on this, so I was wondering if you guys would tell me if this is a hook or not.

spending 7 days in South Africa at a Soweto Township full of HIV affected kids tutoring grade 1-7 students in English as well as help setting up an SAT prep center.

cuz lol, thats about the only hook I have right now lol, thanks in advance for your responses :)

It doesn’t sound like a hook to me. I’m guessing that what you did was lined up for you by your parents. I would assume that if you really had a strong interest in helping disadvantaged kids, you’d have organized and done some major service work with kids in your home area.

Most top college adcoms are not impressed by service that students did abroad except for the rare instances in which students create those projects and raise the money for those projects themselves. Such students usually also stand out for having a very clear and longterm passion for helping others. They don’t suddenly jump into service by doing some abroad project the summer before senior year.
