Reasons to Fall in Love with UMD?

College decisions week hasn’t been too great for me, and since I got rejected from my dream school (McGill), and waitlisted at my second choice (NYU), I’ll most likely end up at UMD. I know Maryland is a great school and I’m trying to get myself excited to go there, but it’s not at all the kind of school I envisioned myself going to. I’ve always thought I would thrive in a fast-paced city environment and Maryland’s sprawling green lawns and colonial architecture just aren’t doing it for me. I’m not particularly interested in sports or football either, and judging from the class of 2018 Facebook group it seems like I’ll be in the minority. Has anyone ever been in the same boat/have any advice? What are the reasons YOU love Maryland? Maybe I’ll fall in love too…
I’m a Government and Politics major as of now and plan on later applying to Philip Merrill so I can double major in poli sci and journalism. I’m in the Scholars’ program and I’m doing Media, Self, and Society.

I’m in a bit of the same situation that you are, but with finances. I was accepted to Carnegie Mellon, UVA OOS, UNCch OOS, NYU (one of my dream schools), among others, but will probably end up at UMD due to financial reasons.

I got interested so I could relate to the other people. If you’re completely against it, though, then you’ll find people that hate sports. I’m anti-athleticism, but’ll still go to a few basketball/football games.

Try to find/start a class of 2018 FB group for Scholars. It’s so much better. My two friends and I scrolled through the FB group and said “Please let me get into the Ivies please let me get into the Ivies” because of (some of the) the kind of people we found on the page. Alas, we’re probably going to UMD, but someone started an Honors FB group for the honors college students. It’s so much better. I met some really awesome people and now have plans to revamp the dead Model United Nations team with someone else in my program.

You’ll find people you like. Trust me.

Hey Vctory, I actually found the group for Scholars and you’re right, it’s so much better! I was pretty nervous about UMD after looking at the main FB group so this is a bit of a relief.

@ramenaddict May I ask how you like the Media, Self, and Society scholars program? My S is considering it. I haven’t seen much posted about that scholars program. Is it worth it, valuable? Are you living in the Cambridge dorm area? What’s that like? Thanks!

Cambridge dorm is a low riser is the Cambridge community. It’s accross from the Eppley rec center (which is really nice ) and ther is a "convenience store in the center of the quad. Due to its hours, the store earned the nickname “incon” (for inconvenient)…but it’s not that bad haha. The quad is closest to math and science buildings and very convenient to the Comcast center. If ur son is a stem major, it is ridiculously convenient to classes.
