Reasons why you think IU is better than UIUC

I made one of these threads in the UIUC forum a while back. Rankings aside, I’d like to hear from people who are going/have went there (IU) some aspects of it that make it a better experience than Illinois. Got into those two and deliberating between the two. Thanks very much in advance.

Better campus. Much better looking in my opinion

thanks. anyone else?

alot of IUs programs (except engineering and accounting) are ranked higher than Illinois

bloomington is a much better and nicer college town than UC. Its in a scenic area of southern indiana and its close to Indianapolis and somewhat close to Louisville while UC is in the middle of nowhere surrounded by cornfields

Pros of IU over UIUC

-Wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy better campus
-Better Business School (minus accounting) on the whole
-Seemed like Bloomington was a safer town than Urbana/Champaign, but not to say Urbana/Champaign is extremely dangerous or anything.
-Friendlier people (atleast I got that feeling)
-If you’re out of state for both, IU is cheaper I believe

A few cons of IU in comparison to UIUC

-Less diversity
-Ranked lower holistically than UIUC

All in all though, both are great schools (I saw many similarities might I add) and you can’t go wrong! :)

Oh oops sorry about the rankings thing, didn’t catch that in your post.

But have you visited both? I think that if you’re considering both equally you should just visit and see which seems like a better fit.

I’d say that IU also has a better choice of events to go to from a theatre/music point of view–and it also has a better student paper.

P.S. James Brown performed at Indiana University earlier this school year just a few months before his death. I hope a few students had a chance to enjoy his music and know what it was like to attend a show by the “Godfather of Soul” and “Hardest working man in Show Business”.

Looking at school papers is a great way to get a feel for a campus. In this case, look at http://www.idsnews.com and http://www.dailyillini.com/

IU may not have the diversity in terms of race, but I wouldn’t say that Illinois is more diverse. Illinois is 93% in-state students. People who go there say it’s just like high school all over again - all the kids from Illinois go there, and everyone hangs out with thier cliques. Indiana only has 63% in-state students - a very low number for a public school.

I would say that the average Illinois student is a bit smarter than the average IU student. I’d also say that they party less - IU has a fantastic party reputation and has many campus events that are amazing. Bloomington is a great college town. It was ranked #7 by Sports Illustrated in best college sports towns, lots of little ethnic restaurants on Kirkwood, tons of parties and beer, it’s just a great place to be. My cousin was in-state at Illinois and decided to go to Purdue because of how awful the Illinois campus was.

UIUC is harder to get into than IU… UIUC has smarter students (Alot of engineering students at UIUC with average ACT of 31-33 do business minor or take Business major courses for social science credits) so it might be harder to get good grade since you have to compete against better students comparing to IU… and I heard students at IU party more… However IU has better campus

So your first sentence of Illinois being better than IU has to do with admissions, which has absolutely nothing at all to do with the education received, the college experience, the social life, the surroundings, the professors, or anything else that even remotely has anything to do with the college experience.

Yeah, that sounds like an Illinois engineering student to me.

Alright, thanks guys I’ve made my decision.

What’s your decision? I was faced with the same dilemma… and I hope I won’t regret my decision…

I chose IU :D
