I am applying to several masters programs for environmental engineering. I have been working at an envi eng consulting firm for about a year and asked my boss if he would write a rec. He agreed, and had a short (1 paragraph) rec he did earlier for me for a scholarship. I have a feeling this is not enough… but he told me to just let him know what all should be included. The problem is… I have no idea what a good rec letter for grad school reads like. Are there basics for length, subject matter that are a must? Any tips as to what makes a good rec letter? Any suggestions would be really helpful, thanks!

Sorry, in light of another post I felt the need to clarify… my boss did not ask me to write the letter, rather to provide him with things to expand on. I realize he has never done such a letter before but I also feel like he would add to the application since my work compliments the major and he has trusted me with several indepth projects. Thanks again for any advice.

Here are some things that could be included in a LOR from a work supervisor:

ability to meet deadlines

ability to follow directions

work ethic

ability to work independently

ability to work as part of a team

ability to think creatively

computer literacy

research / writing ability, and most importantly,

detailed DESCRIPTIONS of what you have accomplished under her/his supervision (successful projects in which you have participated, etc.)
