Receiving a second pell grant

I am hoping to take some summer classes to raise my grades, but summer tuition is really a killer. I was reading about the availability of the second pell grant. I received the full amount on my first, and here is my breakdown of classes:

Fall 2010- 16 credit hours
January Interim- 3 credit hours
Spring 2011- 13 credit hours

I am looking to take 6-12 credit hours over the summer, depending on aid availability. Would I be eligible for an additional Pell Grant?

On another side note, does anyone know what makes students eligible for the FSEOG grant? I have a 0 EFC and didn’t receive one from school (I know they offer it).

Thank you to anyone that can help :)

Your second Pell grant eligibility depends on how many credits you EARNED this year. You would need a combination of earned credits for the year + credits enrolled in for summer that totals at least 1 more than the number of credits considered to be one year’s worth for financial aid purposes (this varies by school). In any case, you must have at least 6 credits for 2nd Pell. Remember that Pell is prorated if you take fewer than 12 credits.

FSEOG is divvied up by the school … they get a pool they can pass out. If you didn’t file your FAFSA by the school’s priority filing deadline, you may have been too late for FSEOG. It’s limited funding, so when it’s gone … it’s gone.

What’s going on with the Summer Pell Grant? Has there been any updates on this as well as the Pell Grant for 2011-2012? The news articles are confusing.

Both houses passed the Continuing Resolution that would allow summer Pell. In addition, they suspended the crossover regulations for this summer, which will allow schools to pay summer from 10-11 even if 11-12 might be a higher Pell payment. The progression requirement stands though (total earned credits from terms in which 2010-11 has been received + credits enrolled summer term must be at least 1 more than the number of credits that define the school’s financial aid year), and students will need at least 6 credits enrollment summer for 2nd Pell.

It is waiting for President Obama’s signature on the dotted line.

Yippee!!! :D

Ditto what swimcatsmom said! Thank you for sharing this, kelsmom!
