receiving letters from universities and colleges

son scored 208 on psat, african american student, he is receiving letters from columbia, brown, duke, university of chicago,… but he has gpa of 3.3, does he have a chance with these colleges and universities?

Not very likely with his GPA, unless he is at a particularly competitive high school, has unusual circumstances to explain lower grades and/or a pattern of steadily improving grades through high school, is a recruitable athlete, and/or has some other very strong or unique factor in addition to a good test score that would make him particularly attractive to the top schools.

But its quite likely that he has good chances and may even get some merit money from some excellent colleges that aren’t quite as competitive as Ivy League. That’s a great PSAT score and certainly shows a lot of potential.

The colleges sending the solicitations received a mailing list from the college board after the PSAT – they are mailing based on the range of his SAT scores, but they don’t know the GPA. When it comes down to making an admission decision, he’d still end up competing against a lot of students with equal or better scores and higher GPA’s.
