Recent commit worried about rodents

Hey recent commit here. Excited but am hesitant about the rodents. I have come to the conclusion that rats around campus and the city at night are a common sight. Almost like squirrels i’ve heard. I do want to hear about experiences with mice in the dorms, though, especially first year dorms. I meanIm already committed and not get me wrong I’m really excited, but beginning to get down that rabbit (rat?) hole of what happens when I start seeing these in my room. Any experiences with the freshman dorms?

If you’re in a big city, there are rats.

My kid goes to school in a city - and there are rats.

There will be rodents at Gtown. They are even at less dense AU.

Maybe you should choose an alternative school that isn’t as urban if it will be a concern…hopefully not in your dorm room!!!

You might check with the school on how they handle rodents.

I’d suggest that rats around the city are different than rats inside of a dorm room, that’s a legitimate health and safety concern.

And they should check with the school, as noted, if they have concerns.

I get it - I wouldn’t want them in my dorm.

It’d be enough - even the thought of it - to have me consider elsewhere - otherwise you’re making a four year commitment.

It doesn’t mean it will happen to OP but sometimes things on your mind are as bad - whether the actual happens or not.

I was referring mostly to your assertion that they shouldn’t go to school in an urban area if they don’t want rats in their dorm room. That sounds dismissive.

My point was simply - rats are a part of city life - and the OP noted this expectation in their first post: “I have come to the conclusion that rats around campus and the city at night are a common sight.”

When I visit my kid, I see them. It would bother me.

So if they will bother a student, I’m not trying to be dismissive.

Even if not inside the dorm, they will be a part of daily life.

If that’s a bother, then yes, they should consider a non-urban location.

Kids choose different schools for different reasons. This one chose Gtown and it’s a wonderful school.

But it would be perfectly reasonable for someone who doesn’t want to see rodents on a daily basis to choose an alternative for that reason.

Sorry you find it dismissive but it’s a perfectly reasonable reason to unselect a school in my opinion.

I thought the worry was about mice in the dorm room, and rats outside. I live in the city a lot of the time and I don’t think that rodents are going to be as much of a problem as you are envisioning.

If there is a mouse in the dorm, it will quickly be taken care of. But all of my kids went to school in cities and never had a mouse in their room. There were bunnies in the yard.

Plenty of mice in rural areas

I am aware that rodents are in cities. I was looking to hear student perspectives to know what to expect. I am not unenrolling nor were rodents a decision maker for me.

does not help

Yes thank you my concern is rodents in the rooms

It would be nice if students from Georgetown or even residents of DC could respond to the OP. I lived in DC for only one year a decade ago. I was shocked by the rats. They are to be seen everywhere. On multiple occasions I was having dinner outside at a restaurant and a rat ran under our table. I was sitting on the green of another college campus in DC (not Georgetown) around noon and a rat ran across the lawn directly in front of me. I never had a rat or mouse in my apartment that year but a colleague had a rat jump out of her oven when she opened it. I have also lived in San Francisco, New York, and the countryside and none had a rodent problem like DC (okay, NYC was close). OP, I will say that I suspect Georgetown does a very good job of controlling any rodents inside their residence halls. My guess is that you will not have a problem in your room. Congrats on your acceptance to a fantastic school and good luck!

I know a current student who has never complained about rodents. Gtown is a fantastic school. But no college is perfect. Go and enjoy.

I live in a nice coastal town and there are rats here too.

The aricle posted above said the campus situation is under control but then goes on to describe disturbing details. It seems the reporter went on a search for stories that may be rare.

I have had mice in my house many times. And in an apartment, first floor. The main thing is to block entrances.

I seriously doubt rodents will be in your room but they certainly may be outside.

Enjoy Georgetown regardless!

We used to live in the area and there are rodents like all big cities. That said, if you find mice in the room, they’ll address it, I’m sure. It very unlikely that you’d end up with a rat in your room.

I wouldn’t worry about it…
