I will be a senior this fall. My dream is to go to one of the top U.S. universities, especailly Stanford. My probablem is that currently I am an international student. My mom will apply for H-1(which is the U.S. recidency) next year. (she got rejected this year, cuz she filled in an inportant part wrong) Since I am not certain that if she could get it or not, I am considering to be a fifth-year senior. My plan is to not take English next year. So I won’t meet the requirement for graduation. This way I would have enough time to wait for my mom’s recidency. In fact, I am dual-enrolling two English Classes at Florida State, but I won’t show my high school my FSU transcript until the end of my senior year.

Would the fact I am a fifth-year senior affect my chance of getting into a good private school? More than whether or nor I am an U.S. recident does?

I don’t know if staying as a senior for the 5th year would affect your chances (you could possibly explain your circumstances on your college application), but I wouldn’t count on using your time as a 5th year senior to wait for the green card.

I was in your situation and it took me forever to get my green card. I actually got it in October when I was filling out my applications.

I would recommend talking to your guidance counselor to see how you should approach this. Good luck! :)

I am not too sure this is a good idea. Ask for legal help before you become a fifth year senior. It may jeopardize your chance to top schools since they would want you to explain that fifth year and waiting for a residency doesn’t seem like a good explanation as plenty of international students apply to top schools, especially privates. Actually for Stanford, you may stand a better chance applying as an international student.
