Recommend me some music

oh, and Sufjan Stevens (check out Chicago, at least)

I think The Cardigans are pretty neat. Very mellow, beautiful voice, a bit of electronica dashed in.

“I like music that makes me feel warm & fuzzy inside.”

I like warm and fuzzy music too. Actually I like lots of different types of music. I’ve never heard of the one you mentioned - what is that like?

I like heavy music, but I prefer heavy music when it is also melodic. That’s why I mentioned Cradle - they are lush and beautiful in addition to being heavy.

But, my fav musician of all time is The Master Peter Gabriel.

For those who might know him only by his 80s hits, you’ve never heard his best stuff. He is an extremely serious artist, brilliant musical composer, and has the most incredible voice - not technically perfect, but able to convey intense emotion like no one else! He can reach deep down inside your psyche, pull out all your pain, expose it, then raise it up so it can be healed. Yeah, profound!

He was also one of the first, if not THE first, to stagedive and crowdsurf, way back in the early 70s! And he invented Goth! Check this out - Check out the pix labeled ‘Genesis Era.’ (He was the original vocalist for Genesis, before they went pop, back when they were serious prog. Download ‘Firth of Fifth’ or ‘Dancing With the Moonlit Knight’ for starters.)

He is absolutely a genius. He has a song for every conceivable emotion. Many people claim his music brought them back from the brink of despair. There are times when nothing else will do.

Oh believe me…I love melodic metal as much as the next. Im a huge fan of symphonic, power, and melodic death…Most of the bands I posted earlier were DM bands, not black for clarification purposes…I just dislike Cradle of Filth because so many better black metal artists exist. As for BM in general…I don’t really enjoy listening to it because of the shoddy sounding production. DM is much more extreme and absolutely brutal when you have a good sound system with sufficient bass. :)

The Cardigans? They’re a Swedish indie band. You might have heard the song “My Favorite Game” from the Gran Turismo album. I don’t like that song particularly, but it was popular when it came out.
Most of there stuff is very mellow, relaxing. The woman who does most of the vocals has a beautiful voice.
It’s good stuff.

Yeah, my son is always getting on my case for mixing up DM and BM. I never can get the genres right. I go by the emotion I feel from the music, rather than the instrumentation. But since he plays electric guitar, he is a stickler for accuracy on genres. So your comments remind me of his. (Although, he loves most of the bands you mentioned, but he loves Cradle as well. But he likes their earlier stuff just as much as the later stuff, whereas I can only tolerate a few songs off of Dusk & Midian etc. and I absolutely ADORE Nymphetamine & Thornography, their more recent and most polished works.)

–

Do you like the…uh, not sure what the genre is…bands like Finntroll, Moonsorrow…?

Tristania…Within Temptation…Therion?

Rhapsody? Sonata Arctica? Children of Bodom? Dark Tranquility?

Undoubtedly, Elvis Presley, The Prodigy, and some Gospel Music on my top 3 list.

Oh, and Phoenix! Fantastic band out of France. Started as a backup band for Air, but I think they’ve done well in their own right.

And I like The New Pornographers, as well. I’ve only listened to one CD, but they have a quirky style that really appeals to me.

True metalheads are VERY picky about labeling a band’s genre. There are clear, distinctive differences between genres non-metalheads cannot perceive. Im glad your son is keeping it metal as ****.

Hell yes I love Finntroll…haven’t heard too much of Moonsorrow, but I know OF them. :)

Tristania is alright…gothic metal…alright. Bodom is amazing (own 1 shirt), huge fan of them. HUGE fan of Therion as well. Huge fan of Rhapsody(own 1 band shirt) and Sonata Arctica (own 2 SA band shirts)…and DT.

The REAL crazy thing is…is that you’re a mom who actually knows more about metal than most people I meet…thats incredible.

Thanks! Yeah, I hear that from my son’s friends all the time.

And my son is EXTREMELY picky. You and he could probably converse quite on the same wavelength. He gets exasperated with me all the time. I may seem like I know a lot but he thinks I should know all these sub-genres and I just can’t get it to that degree of finesse.

I was a major metalhead back in the 70s (back then, ‘metal’ was Led Zep, Sabbath, UFO, Scorps before they went commercial, BOC before they went dreadfully soft, and of course the mighty Priest, before they went commercial and came back again) then a New Wave/punk rocker in 79-80, then got into New Age music when my son was little…actually got rid of all my rock albums for awhile, can you believe it! So I totally missed the 80s, thankfully. Although, the one good thing about the 80s was Metallica…who I turned my son on to when he was old enough. (I waited til he started getting into heavier music on his own. I didn’t want to corrupt him.) I started him with artsy prog stuff when he was younger (Styx, Supertramp, Genesis, Kansas, TDream, etc.) but at around 13 on his own he started getting into Korn, Disturbed, etc… Up until then, hubby & I used to watch those bands on tv after he was in bed…ha. Then, in the last couple of years he has taken off with all this music…tons of stuff that I never would have heard of. I like most of what he likes EXCEPT the harsh vocals…can’t handle the vocals, but alot of it the music is awesome and I wish they had a SINGER! I love SINGING! Halford has the best voice in the history of metal, imo.

We saw CoB and wow, if you EVER get a chance to catch them, they are by far the most high-energy band live I’ve ever seen! (well, along with AFI but in a different way.)

I really hate how the methed-out moshers have ruined the concert experience, though. Nasty stuff, that is. Concerts used to be fun. Now they’re violent and you have to stay on the side or in the back if you want to avoid getting your head bashed in. Yeah, they’ve really ruined the concerts. I resent that.

If you like Finntroll you will probably like Moonsorrow.

Oh, and I have a love-hate relationship with Opeth, for obvious reasons. They are among my son’s top bands. I think they are brilliant and I LOVE Mikael’s voice when he SINGS but not when he growls. Awesome music, though.

Anyway, you don’t have to quit loving music just because you get old…

fw, I must ask you this: Have you actually HEARD Nymphetamine & Thornography, or did you give up on them after Midian?

Oh, and I have a CoF shirt (one of the few that isn’t obsene), a CoB shirt (Reaper) and 2 Sonata Arctica shirts. We met Sonata Arctica after the show, also Alexi.

I second the Blue Oyster Cult, Eagles, Queen, and Billy Joel recommendations.

Also second Peter Gabriel, Led Zeppelin, Chicago, and Boston

and throw Electric Light Orchestra into the mix

Yeah…I never really was into death metal until very recently…which was when I got a new sound system for my computer which had a monster subwoofer. That allowed for me to hear the bass and after I realized death metal = blast beat? The rest is history. Before that…I was a major power metal fan.

Thats pretty crucial how you were into all those progenitors of metal way back when…seriously. But it’s kinda too bad that you missed the 80’s!!! That’s when metal was INTENSE. Hair and thrash!

In terms of concerts…I’m not too aware of this meth thingy…moshing in the pit is still fun, but it’s kinda ■■■■■■■■ now because hardcore kids ruin metal shows. I’m alright with Opeth, but I don’t listen to them often.

I’ve heard of Nymphetamine but not Thornography. :frowning:
And yes I want to see CoB live…alot of my friends have and they’ve said it’s intense. But I’ve been to a couple shows myself and so far…Dragonforce is by far the most intense band I’ve seen live  CoB actually headlined (and Amon Amarth supported) on the 17th here at the Nokia Theater in Times Square but I didn’t go because it was too close too finals. Im actually going to a Slayer show in Feb. which is DEF. going to be brutal

We saw Amon Amarth open for In Flames. My son is really into them - just got their live dvd - but I don’t care for them - the vocals thing again. He has seen Slayer. I do like Dragonforce…and Demons and Wizards…

So relieved you haven’t heard Cradle’s last 2 albums. Since you like melodic stuff too, definitely give Cradle another chance and listen to Nymphetamine. It is very, very different from their earlier stuff! Absolutely stunning. Thornography is the new album and I like it but it is not the masterpiece as is Nymphetamine.

Also check out Gojira ‘From Mars to Sirius’ - this is some seriously heavy stuff, with great lyrics and vox that I can handle. And I’ve heard they are incredible live, but I have yet to see them.

Good to see that you have an appreciation for the earlier stuff! And that you put finals before concerts! Smart boy!
