Recommend private universities? Anywhere in the US! :)

<p>Ive been thinking about out of state (from california) so can anyone recommend any private universities in Cali and out of state that I could be a match for and that have good financial aid (my family would qualify as low-income) here are some stats</p>

<p>GPA: uw: 3.5 w: 4.21</p>

<p>SAT I: 1660 580cr 560m 520w (retook in oct waiting for scores)</p>

<p>ACT: (I’m taking it in oct 22)</p>

<p>SAT II: us history 650. Math II 550 (will retake in November along with bio and Spanish)</p>

<p>Class rank: 31 out of 570</p>

<p>AP’s: art history 4, us history 3, English Lang 3
Will take: American gov, english lit, calculus ab, european history</p>

<p>Extracurriculars: three clubs for two years (weak i know) Key club, animal club, earth savers club
Volunteer: at library 100+ hours</p>

<p>Might major in these: biochem, biomedical engineering, international relations (maybe minor), or undeclared </p>

<p>Does it help if Im a Hispanic female?</p>

<p>Flagler College in St Augustine, FL</p>

<p>It’s in a great town.</p>

<p>The college was formerly a luxury hotel in the 1890’s.</p>

<p>Tuition, for some reason, is VERY low for a private college.</p>

Wellesley would be great. A reach, though.
Most of the schools on the list are admissions reaches for any excellent student. If Michigan State, Northern Illinois, or Texas A&M appeal to you, these would be reasonable matches for you and would be affordable. (I love Michigan State.)</p>

<p>Have you tried to retake your SAT? Try retaking it again in Nov. If you can raise your scores to above 1800, you can take a shot at Chapman U., in Calif.</p>

<p>I’m not sure how these costly OOS publics would be affordable to a low income student. How would the costs get paid? </p>

<p>Texas A&M COA = about $33k</p>

<p>Mich St COA = $42k (wow! for a non flagship!)</p>

<p>NIU COA = about $31k</p>

<p>At an OOS public where a student wouldn’t qualify for merit scholarships, this student would likely only be given a Pell grant and a student loan…maybe covering about $11k.</p>

<p>I don’t know whether you are open to OOS public schools or not, but looking at the list posted above, I would suggest applying to Georgia Tech, if you are considering a technical major. Don’t go unless they offer you a good scholarship that brings the price comparable to what you might get at a UC. Also, be warned - Georgia Tech has some of the toughest academics around. Students at Tech don’t boast about being “A Hell of an Engineer” for nothing!</p>

<p>Californiangal:you are both an underrepresented minority and economically disadvantaged, and many private colleges will tame that into account (unlike the UC’s). That being said, you should definitely apply to some UC’s and Cal State schools.</p>

<p>Regarding previous suggestions:Michigan, North Illinois- how does spending half the year in snow sound? Think of climate, because it can be a big deal if you are not used to snow (I am from LA and spent a miserable freshman year in a cold place). Texas A&M- that is where Rick Perry went- it appears to be very conservative and maybe religious- maybe not the best place for a California-born minority.</p>

<p>In California: check out Occidental, University of Redlands, Santa Clara (Catholic but liberal), Unuversity of San Diego, Pepperdine. All with good rep for recruiting minorities and giving minorities good financial aid. Hope that helps.</p>

<p>I agree with Flagler (I’m a student, feel free to PM me!) & U of Tampa. Also maybe look at Elon U. You might be able to add Boston U as a reach, though I would look into their aid more intensely first.</p>
