Recommendation Dilemma

My math teacher has been out for about 3 weeks due to injury, and will end up needing surgery. This means that he won’t be back for another month (mid-November). Now, before the accident I only had him as a teacher for about 2 weeks so he doesn’t know me very well. And from my research, I should be giving him the recommendation forms around the time he returns. But how will he be able to fill them out when he barely knows my name? Any guidance would be much appreciated!

Ask the admissions office if they will take last year’s math teacher as a recommendation, given the circumstances. They will probably like that you are aniticipating giving it to a teacher who knows you better.

Yep. Explain it to the adcom and ask if you need to sub supplemental work. The real value of a teacher recommendation is to determine if you work hard, can do BS level work, and have other good study habits.

Since BS students are more independent (and since the teachers end up living on campus with students) they’re looking for students who are smart and not high maintenance. When in doubt, get a few other teacher recs to bring that point home. Your test scores and grades will do the rest of the work.
