Recommendation for base for visiting WDC and Virginia Colleges (Richmond) without car

We are planning a summer college trip to visit Georgetown, American, GW, and Richmond. My DS25 is a possible Poli Sci major. We will take Amtrak down from NYC, no car, and would love suggestions on where to stay. WDC and day trip to Richmond? Other colleges near or between the two cities (or on the way) we should consider for a pit-stop?

DC without a car is not a problem. Richmond is. I would recommend renting one for the day, even if it is just for being in Richmond. Take Amtrak to Richmond, rent there. U of R is not downtown (and the train station is not either- it’s fairly suburban). You can take an uber to a car rental place- driving around the city is fairly easy but public transit is not. You can also look at VCU while there, or make another trip an hour west to UVA or an hour east to William and Mary. Definitely do train between DC and Richmond, though, traffic on 95 in the summer (or any time of year) between the two is atrocious.

If you’re looking for a school that would be an easier admit, you’ll be driving right past Mary Washington on the way down 95 from DC to Richmond. It’s a smaller school, and just on the edge of Fredricksburg, but not a city vibe at all, like the others you’re looking at. But it has a solid reputation and the people we know who’ve gone there like it. If you have time to kill during your trip Fredricksburg has some interesting history to check out and might be a nice way to spend some time taking a break from college touring. If your child hasn’t checked out a small school outside of a city this might be a good opportunity just to make sure that vibe isn’t interesting to them.
