Recommendation from a club moderator

Hi everyone. I have another quick question on recommendations. I was in a program organized by people outside of school. Should I ask the program moderator for a recommendation? She’s not my teacher nor is she from my school. Would that count? If it does, how important would it be?

Thanks everyone.

Are you talking about replacing one of your teacher LORs with the club moderator or having her send a supplemental LOR?

If the former, no it won’t count and you should not do it.

If the latter, it’s OK to do. How important it is depends on the individual college and how strong the LOR is (how long was the program, how much did she interact with you, what does she have to add about you beyond what your teachers & GC have said, etc.).

Most colleges require two from an academic teacher that you’ve had in either your junior or senior years because they have spend 9+ months with you on a daily basis and they know you well. However, many colleges will allow you to send in an extra rec from someone like your program moderator, who isn’t necessarily a classroom teacher, but that knows you well. If you believe your program moderator can provide info about you that your teachers cannot (ad coms don’t want repetitive infomation) then you should definitely send it in. =D
