Recommendation letter question

For many colleges they ask for 2 recommendation letter from “2 different academic subjects.”

Although I have know my French teacher for 3 years, my AP bio teacher and AP chem teacher who also doubled as my science research teacher knows me better. However, Biology and Chemistry are both in the sciences, so would it be better to ask French and Chemistry, or try to send in Biology and Chemistry?

Schools I’m thinking of applying to: Harvard, Northwestern, Princeton, Dartmouth, and many of the UC’s (since I’m in California). However, UCs don’t accept recommendation letters, so it doesn’t really make a huge difference.

Oh I’ve just looked and Princeton uses the term “2 different areas of study”. Can anyone help me interpret this?
