Recommendation letters, etc.

I have a couple of questions about the admission process that’s really bothering me…
I’m currently a Junior in hs. I’m really interested in studying Economics, but I’m not too familiar with the subject.
I’m taking AP Econ right now, and since I’m not familiar I’m not getting the best grades (B+ last marking period, B- second marking period).
But since I want to study Econ in college and possibly major in it, I have a couple of questions:

  1. is this stupid of me? even though I’m interested, should I not bother majoring since I’m not good?
  2. would colleges reject me if I put econ as my interest, but get low grades in hs?
  3. I was planning on asking my econ teacher for my rec letter since I want to study it in college, but is that even the right approach? I have other teachers that I can ask and probably know me a lot better, but would it be a good idea to have my Econ teacher write one as well?

Thanks in advance

  1. No, A B hardly qualifies as “not good”. If you like the subject and are interested, you can list it as your intended major. Colleges are going to expect most applicants to change majors at some point anyway.
  2. “Low” here is relative. It depends on the schools you are applying to. I think that even if you do get a B in econ and apply for that major, maybe it will just seem as though you have a tough teacher or you have perseverance to do things you are interested in even when you are not perfect in those areas.
  3. Ask the teachers that know YOU best, not necessarily teachers who teach the subject you may want to major in. The letters of rec are primarily to convey your personal qualities, not how good you are at school (colleges can tell this already from your transcript and test scores).

I hope this helps.
