recommendation letters from lecture-style classes

How do you go about getting rec letters from these types of classes?

I heard the TA often writes the letter and the professor then signs them.

By getting to know the professor. Be persistent, but not overbearing. I personally would never used a TA LOR. I prefer my letter writers to have PhDs (or some doctorate degree).

How do you set the deadline for the letter to be written? I’m not applying for another 1-2 years.

I know professors are insanely busy and they often have problems with getting letters written in a timely fashion.

Ask now! Don’t be the person that comes in during their third year and says “um, yeah I took your class 2 years ago - can I have a LOR?” If you did well in a class or got to know the prof and want a LOR from them, go to the professor the next quarter. That way you don’t have to worry about time, etc.
