I read this on the U of C site:
“The general guideline is to ask teachers who taught you during your junior yearthey have taught you for a full year, and have instructed you in the most advanced coursework youve had to date. However, feel free to use a senior year teacher or a teacher who has had you in the past or in multiple years.”

Does that mean I cannot ask a teacher I had in the 10th grade?

As a U of C admissions officer, I can tell you that you are welcome to ask a teacher from 10th grade to write your recommendation, but in our experience, it is usually more valuable to have a recommendation from someone familiar with your most recent work.

That being said, if you feel your 10th grade teacher would write the best, most interesting, and accurate recommendation, then go ahead and ask them to write it.

I got in last year with a recommendation from a senior year and a sophomore year teacher. The sophomore year teacher had advised a club I was in, and I felt he knew me better than a lot of my junior year teachers.

Ditto here, Natalie. S also had the soph teacher first semester senior year, but she knew him very well for various activities, and had told him she wanted to write his letter. Worked for him!
