Recommendations for ~$600 laptop?

I am looking for an inexpensive laptop for my daughter's boyfriend to take to school. I built him a nice desktop earlier this year so he doesn't need a real powerful laptop. I was thinking of an i3 with 4 GB of RAM. Probably a little more than he needs, but I can't see buying anything less. I am constantly watching the blockbuster sales at newegg and CompUSA, but I am not sure where else I should be looking. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

An i3 530 /w 4GB RAM is actually quite a powerful laptop.

I consider myself a fairly intense user, compiling programs, running virtual machines, etc. However, the laptop I got 2yr ago still works for me. It's a Core 2 Duo P8700 /w 2GB RAM, much less powerful than the one you're seeking for your daughter's boyfriend.

I'd focus on a laptop that looks nice and is solidly built rather than on the power. See if there are any last-generation Dell Latitudes or Lenovo Thinkpads.
