recommendations from the smarties at CC

I’m taking 3 students to visit colleges in KY and OH and will be near I-75 also into TN. I need some recs for others to possibly visit…here are the basics you may need to know:

S1 = good GPA with good ECs but not a cc-type overacheiver (few APs).

S2=great GPA few ECs but academic overachiever (most APs).

S3=ok GPA, few ECs, hardly any APs/honors. CRAZY smart but doesn’t apply self due to family situation (doubted college was even a possibility) Very possible PSAT will qualify semi-fin for NM. I think will be considered independent student when turns 18.

S1 & S2 know what they are looking for in a college re: size, academics, ECs, etc.

S3 just tagging along, but I am hoping to provide some hope and trying to find one to two schools with good need-based financial aid. Won’t be able to visit Berea but we may stop by for a meal and at least see campus…not sure academic stats will qualify there.

IDEAS for schools in our travel area with great need-based aid with very average stats???

need-based aid (Financial aid) doesn’t really concern itself with academic stats. It’s EFC that mostly matters. Merit scholarships look at stats.

Do you know what these kids’ EFCs will be?

Are you trying to make it hard on us with three disparate student types? Berea would fit for the great financial need category.

AMENDED:
Sorry - Just ignore student 1 & 2 - probably pretty high EFC for both, doubt either will qualify for any need-based and they know what they want in a school.

Focus on student 3. Like I said, I think will be considered independent at 18. Guardian situation. If not, Guardians are retired so my guess is EFC would be 0

Wooster, Denison, Oberlin, Marietta, Kenyon, Oberlin

If student is in guardianship when he reaches the age of 18, he is independent for purpose of financial aid. Hopefully, the guardianship is legal - if not, student must request dependency override, because he is not automatically independent without a court order for guardianship.

Student 3 is a junior? Encourage him to find an EC he likes, even if it’s totally outside of school. My own S is EC-less, but he communicated his band/recording interests as ECs. Encourage him to put his nose to the grindstone so he can show an upward trend in school. Maybe visits & sessions with the admissions counselors will help.

The schools suggested above look good. What is student interested in being when he grows up?

If they are juniors, try to visit at least one big school (like Ohio State) and at least one small school (like Wittenberg).
