Recommendations - if a school doesn't require them?

As the title basically says, is it worth sending in if a school doesn’t require them? Or sending two if a school only requires one?

I’m sure its “ok” but do schools actually take extra recommendations into consideration, or are they just a waste of paper/time?

Yeah, if it’s a match/safety school you probably shouldn’t bother. If it’s a reach, and the rec will be outstanding, it could only boost your chances.

yea…it’s not gong to hurt, either they look at it or they throw it out…either way, they don’t penalize you.

Check the Common Data Set, if available (section C7). It’ll say if they consider recommendations. The UCs say “not considered,” for example, so it would be pointless to send them.

Not necessarily. Admissions officers have a saying: “The thicker the file, the thicker the applicant.”

Except that the UCs throw out any recommendations they look at. If you somehow end up borderline and they contact you, then you might send one in.

It depends on where you’re applying. Check the school’s policy – UCs, for example, neither require nor want recommendations.
