Oh cool! You’re from Iowa? Always nice to meet another student from there.

Anyways, the only part of your application which appears to be less than stellar is the ECs. When I look at them, nothing really stands out to me. Is there any way you can separate yourself from the crowd, any way you can go more in depth in your interests in order to show the admissions officers you are a unique and valuable applicant? If investment/business is truly a passion of yours (not just something you are doing because it looks good), then explore your passion - try to get even more involved than you currently are. If you can show depth and dedication to your interests, then you have a much better chance.

Wow…I have to say, I’m surprised that you were deferred. I would try to keep the 4.0 for the midyear report and start contacting the admissions office; maybe email them or write them a letter explaining your passion for the university and asking if there’s anything they recommend that you do in order to take the next step?

whoops, I can believe that I forgot to post this: I have spent over 1000 hours working for and helping manage my family’s small business (that’s why I don’t have many ECs).

Thanks for the reply RyanMK I’ll look to see how I can expand my business ECs

@cowboycliche022 Thank you for the advice, I plan to email my admissions processor Monday and ask her what she would recommend for ways to improve my application

Oh, well including that information about your family’s business, I’m not quite sure why you were deferred - that’s exactly the type of passion and dedication that I was talking about. I guess the only thing you can do is keep your grades up and take any opportunity you have to improve your resume.

Unfortunately no, but I think that I’m going to have my English Teacher send a letter of recommendation, I’m one of her favorite students and her name should carry some weight because she was a national teacher of the year. Hopefully that will give me a boost

I would say keep doing what you’re doing and possibly even send a letter explaining that you are still highly interested in the university. You are already a strong applicant and frankly I’m surprised you were waitlisted.
