<p>It won’t magically make you if you have crap scores, but poor ones can break you.</p>
<p>Their primary purpose is to humanize you and to help fill in some the gaps that you can’t tell from looking at a transcript.</p>
<p>If you’re borderline or you’re up for merit scholarships, I’d imagine that they’d dig deeper into your essays and recs. Otherwise, it’s basically a numbers game; I can’t imagine them spending more than a minute reading your essays given the fact that they have thousands to read in such a short time.</p>
