Recommended by department, Waitlisted by Admissions

In February I was e-mailed by a grad professor saying the department had recommended me for admission, and that he would like me to come to the campus to meet some faculty and talk about an assistanship, as well as tour the facilities. I have just checked my status through their online portal and it has changed to “waitlist offered”. I am wondering if this is common among graduate programs - to waitlist (or reject) applications who meet the General Admission requirements and have been recommended for acceptance by the department.

Is this simply a reality of competitive programs, or should I be contacting someone to see if a mistake has been made?

I would contact someone to check if there’s a screwup. It’s certainly possible that the professor was wrong, but you should follow up.

He asked you in February, and you haven’t yet visited? Perhaps that’s the problem. They may think that you’re not interested, or, if the visit is already arranged, they may be waiting for the interview to take place.

In any case, no one here can answer your question. Call to find out your status.

The interview is scheduled for early April, they know I’m interested.

I’m certain there are at least some people that can answer the question “does this happen normally or could something be wrong?” I will, of course, contact the school once I get official correspondence, which should be soon via e-mail or postal mail.

Why would you wait? Don’t be afraid - just contact them and find out what’s up. If you wait until they send you something, it could be too late. You have to be assertive in this process.
