Recommended Colleges / Universities and Chance me please

<p>A warning… this is extremely long.</p>

<p>Username: LittleJc
Ethnicity: Asian (Chinese)
School: Residential High School (boarding school) – Math and Science

  • Sophomores – Seniors
  • There is only 3 grades in this school.
    Gender: Female
    Grade: Senior (2011)
    Location: Alabama (blah…)
I will be first generation (to complete high school and go to college). My family has a pretty low income. I have a brother and sister (both attending / attended college).</p>

<p>Academics:
GPA (unweighted): 4.0
GPA (weighted): ----
Class Rank: My school does not provide a class rank =/ … because they believe it’ll make students feel like it is unfair and such (even though they have a end of the school year award assembly ???)
Class Size: Around 80</p>

<p>Scores:
ACT: 27
I am fully aware that my standardize testing score is rather terrible. =/ Which brings me to the point of asking you all, how much does standardize testing scores actually matter? I score extremely high for class settings but during standardize tests… I completely fail. I receive a lot higher grades (not trying to sound arrogant) than the people who have higher standardize testing scores. I really do not believe it judges someone’s ability to do well in college but of course colleges may think otherwise.
I’m going to take SAT subject test during the next available time.

  • SAT MATH II
  • SAT Chemistry
AP Chemistry: Will know in July…
AP Biology: Will know in July…
AP BC Calculus: Will know in July…</p>

<li> That may not appear as much classes as sophomore year but it is because there are a lot of classes that takes one whole year (or multiple terms).</li>
</ul>

<p>Classes (senior year): At boarding school – What I plan to take</p>

<p>o Senior English I and II
o Government
o Economics
o AP Environmental Science
o AP Physics B
o Linear Algebra (Cal 3, I think?)
o Multivariable
o Organic Series
o Biochemistry
o Concert Band
o Varsity Volleyball (maybe)
o There are other classes… but I do not have my schedule for all if just yet.</p>

<ul>
<li> I do have a question for all of you. AP Physics C is offered at the school, HOWEVER, the teacher for that is known to be … not a good teacher. Most likely end up learning more for AP Physics B than C. Plus, if I take AP Physics C, I cannot take AP Environmental Science. Should I or should I not take AP Physics C?</li>
</ul>

<p>By the end of my senior year, I would have taken almost all of the math course offered (there are some that I have completely no interest in). </p>

<p>Extracurricular Activities (during school year):</p>

<ul>
<li><p>Freshman Year
 I was extremely active in marching band and percussion ensemble (which basically consumed all my time, therefore, I could not go to any math competitions =/)
 WGI – Competed with our group in Dayton, Ohio’
o This is Winter Guard International
o Competed with Percussion Ensemble (not colorguard…)
 Attended NUMEROUS marching band competitions (around 5 or more…)
 Helped all day with a marching competition hosted by our school.
 FCLA</p></li>
<li><p>Sophomore Year
 Help set up for High School Science Bowl and Middle School Science Bowl
 Oriental Exploration
o Help set up for Fall Festival
o Help set up for Chinese New Year event
 Help tutor students
 Attended numerous math competitions.
 Junior Civitan
o Setting up for Goofy Olympics</p></li>
<li><p>Junior Year
 Oriental Exploration – Secretary
o Help set up Chinese New Year, Spring Festival, and any events hosted by the club.
 Junior Civitan – Treasurer
o Setting up and cleaning up for the back to school dance
o Setting up for the Goofy Olympics
o Helped with the can food drive
o Help buy supplies for events
 National Spanish Honor Society
 National Honor Society
 Little Sisters of the Poor
 Tutored Students
 Others: Help setup for Geekfest, help setup for the boo bash
 Help (all day / before the event) for High School Science Bowl
 Help (before the event) for Middle School Science Bowl
 Open (look over) the Library, around 60 hours plus (total)</p></li>
<li><p>Senior Year – activities I plan to do
 Chemistry Research with chem. teacher (she’s has a Phd. degree)
o Extremely excited about this… it’s going to be chemistry relating to medical type fields
o Will most likely end up submitting to the Science Fair (even though by this time, college applications and such would be over with)
 SGA (basically the student council) – Secretary
 Junior Civitan – Vice President
 Oriental Exploration – President
 Freelancing Club – Founder / President
o A new idea (never created before) where you freelance (earn money) for charities.
o The freelancing revolves around website development.
o Goal: Raise $10,000… I am aware that this appears to be a lot but in reality with freelancing (web development) this is extremely little.
o I will have to first teach people how to freelance (the long part)…
 Math Proctor (tutoring) – Every week for 3 hours – Total hours will be around 120+.
 Other activities…</p></li>
</ul>

<p>Please note: I am sure I volunteered for other events but most likely forgot about it. =[
Also… I’m aware my senior year (not my junior year) for extracurricular activities will be my strong point.</p>

<p>Summer Activities:</p>

<p> Freelancing – Earning money from the internet from programming / website designing
 Help my parents out at the restaurant
o This school year summer (2010) – Over 160 + hours, I will be helping out at the restaurant… Just this summer. I suppose this can be counted as volunteer hours?
o This consumes most of my summer time, therefore, I have no time to volunteer at hospitals… nor can I do summer programs.
 I have a job opportunity offered by my boarding school to help develop their new website. I’m attempting to receive it but due the distance, transportation, and such, I may not be able to take this…</p>

<p>If you read through all of this, I thank you for your patience and time! I also apologize for any grammar mistakes / typos I made.</p>

<p>Please give me recommendation to different schools and my chances for the followings:
Stanford (my dream college)
UCLA
MIT
CIT (Caltech)
Rice
UC Berkeley
Princeton
Emory
Yale (my mother wants me to go here…)</p>

<p>If you did not notice from everything above, I am interested in math and science type fields… I extremely love chemistry.</p>

<p>I have other colleges … but those are safety colleges (99.9% sure I’ll be accepted)</p>

<p>Get ur scores up. They matter. ll the above are high reaches. Get that act score to like 30-32 ish and you’ll have a chance</p>

<p>@ansrox
I’m aware of that, trying to higher my score today. However, if I am not able rise it this year (hopefully I will)… Would my other activities / grades not balance it out? I know that there is a slight acceptance rate (<10%) for some of these ivy leagues / top colleges with my type of ACT score.</p>

<p>Unless you get your ACT up to around 30+, you will have abysmally low chances at Caltech, MIT, Stanford, Princeton, Yale, and Cal (OOS). Emory and Rice are slightly easier and may consider you with your current ACT.
Edit: UCLA may also be possible currently but not probable due to OOS.</p>

<p>Does the extracurricular activities not count towards anything? Especially the research and creation of a new club idea.
I know standardize testing scores are crucial but there is still the chance with my type of scores, is there not? I absolutely CANNOT seem to raise the scores, I utterly / epically fail at standardize testing scores. =(</p>

<p>Isn’t OOS of easier to get into? … They want to be more diverse do they not?
And please note, I am from ALABAMA… Which means being Asian is extremely different, therefore, I face racial / prejudice moment(SSSSS). And to stand out between the other ethnicity? Just a question about that.</p>

<p>Nope. If you’re Asian, you’re Asian - unless you’re a North Korean refugee or something similar, the “prejudice” that you faced won’t have a significant weight on your college application.</p>
