Recommended Deadline vs Priority Deadline?

So, I have applied to a school early action, and another early decision. Obviously, the early decision school is my first choice, but I have a hypothetical situation I want to be ready to assess, just in case things work out well.

The EA school makes a decision around the end of this year, and the ED one decides by the beginning of February. The EA school has two enrollment deadlines: the recommended deadline, and the priority deadline. The Recommended one ends when regular decision applications are due; this happens to be the beginning of February as well. Its priority deadline falls at the beginning of May.

I’m curious as to what exactly the differences are between deadlines. I’d assume that recommended is not mandatory, but simply the best time for an applicant who has been accepted early to take advantage of a spot in that school. So, as I must wait for the ED school to make a decision by February, I would potentially miss the recommended enrollment deadline for the EA school. If the ED school denies, but the EA has accepted, would there be a likely possibility that I am still eligible to enroll by May? If anything, I’d be able to do so shortly after the recc. deadline ends, so I wouldn’t have passed much time.

Sorry for the convoluted explanation. Thanks to anyone who may know.

Call them and ask what the priority deadline is for.

Also, if the EA is your clear second choice you could pay your deposit to hold your space while waiting for the ED response. Worst case scenario you’d lose that deposit if you accepted an offer from the ED school.
