A friend’s son is considering taking a gap year, wants to weigh the pros and cons. Any recommended resources to guide them that I could suggest? Thanks.
You might want to ask this question over at the prep school parents forum as many students who attend boarding school seem to consider a gap year.
Thanks, I will try that.
Seems like the typical resources would be the ones for job seekers.
Middlebury College has a page of Gap Year resources. http://www.middlebury.edu/admissions/apply/gapyear/bibliography
My daughter, now a first year student at Mt. Holyoke, did a gap year. She did an internship with Student Conservation Association in the fall. They place young people in positions throughout the National Park Service and Forest Service. Housing and a stipend are provided. My daughter interned with the Forest Service in Olympic National Forest developing interpretative materials on the history of the area. It was an amazing experience. After that she took a 10 day class to earn her Wilderness First Responder, worked to earn $$, and then went backpacking in South America with a couple of friends. She finished up her time staying with family who live off the grid in Northern California, very different than our lifestyle! In retrospect we can see that she did a lot of maturing over the year and built up her confidence. It was absolutely the right choice for her.
That does sound amazing @LeftofPisa, good for your daughter!
Thanks for the link, I will pass it on.
