Recording Lectures

How common is it for a student at Columbia to use a digital recorder to record a lecture? Are most professors for it or against it?

I’ve only seen people recording science lectures and not humanities ones. I wouldn’t say it’s super common, but it’s not unheard of. In classes where people recorded lectures, the professors didn’t seem to have any problem with it. But in general, I think it’s a good idea to ask if it’s okay.

i was in a history class that someone recorded every time. and i also know of a student that has a learning disability also chose to record every class.

usually it is best (and most courteous) to tell the professor ahead of time - the professors are sometimes weary that you might have more sinister reasons (in the time where lectures get fwd to fox news and the like, you can imagine these fears are not completely without merit) so when you tell them, it works well. i can imagine a scenario where a prof gets weirded out if he sees himself recorded without someone asking first.

Thanks for the info, demeter and admissionsgeek!

I only ask because I have bad short-term memory so it’s hard for me to take good notes.
