Is he willing to wait a year if a coach would offer him now? If so, then contact those coaches at schools he was accepted to.
If he’s looking for engineering, then he should consider the schools @politeperson mentioned, plus Colorado School of Mines (Div 2) or Colorado Mesa (Div 2) at which he’d get WUE tuition for the first 2 years but then ‘transfer’ to U of Colorado (he’d still be in school at Mesa but his diploma in engineering would come from U of Colorado). It’s possible he could get into these schools for fall, but not sure about money from merit or athletics at this point.
Running at altitude is its own challenge.

Colorado Mines would be a great option. I wasn’t sure if it was too late there. Worth an email for sure. Great coaching and strong academics.
Altitude definitely is different. A California 4:16 is probably a Colorado 4:22 and feels a lot worse.
You raise a good point about future transfers. With many first year engineering courses being similar and the ease of the transfer portal, a student like this would have options even if starting at a school that wasn’t a perfect fit. (A school like CU would require another leap in performance for running to be a fit but even within California a transfer from a UC or cal state to a better fit school/program is realistic).

I didn’t mean to be confusing about the transfer. At Colorado Mesa, engineering students are considered part of the regular undergrad school (although in engineering) for the first two years. After that, they stay at Mesa, in Grand Junction, but are considered at CU engineering school students. The transfer in internal. Mesa is a WUE school, so for the first 2 years the student is eligible for WUE rates (150% of instate rates) but CU doesn’t participate in WUE so for the final 2 years the students have to pay the OOS rate (I think it is the Mesa rate, not the CU Boulder rate).
An athlete would be on the Mesa team the whole time, and it’s a D2 school.
When we were in California, our high school had 6 student athletes go to Mesa, mostly lax and baseball. It was very popular. As a comparison, only 3 went to UCLA and 3 to Cal (non-athletes).
Got it, that makes sense. I was skimming and missed that detail.
Patriot League schools (such as Lehigh, Lafayette, Bucknell, & Colgate) ?
1600/mile recruiting times are 4:20 and 4:28.
If OP’s son were a junior, these would be good suggestions. However, I suspect the Patriot League schools fall into the category of already having their admissions door shut for the HS class of 2024.

Agree, but we really do not know. OP should contact Patriot League schools because his time in the 1600 is much better than the recruiting times shared by each school.
OP: Invest is an email or phone call to any Patriot League schools that are of interest to you.
