I am a junior from PA, and I recently received a poster from Duke containing information on how to visit etc. I am a good student, but my SAT score (2060) is not near Duke’s normal range. Does anyone know what might have caused this? I am thrilled with this development, but I don’t know what to make of it. Any help is appreciated.

Sorry to burst your bubble too much, but I wouldn’t call it a recruiting letter in the sense that Kyrie Irving was recruited to play for Coach K. Rather somewhere along the line, you probably took the PSAT, SAT, ACT, or APs and did reasonably well. You also probably gave permission for the testing organization (CollegeBoard, ACT, etc) to share the names and contact info of students with good scores with colleges and scholarship organizations. Finally, Duke probably requested info for students with scores within a certain range which contained your info. Thusly, Duke is sending you promotional material in the hopes that you’ll consider applying there.

But congratulations anyways, you must have done well somewhere for all that to happen.

I did too pretty well on the PSAT (214). That probably explains it. I can only wish I was recruited like Kyrie Irving.

SBR got it. The College Board has a student search service where they sell your information to colleges and if you fit a particular demographic, a college will send you letters encouraging you to apply, visit, etc. This doesn’t help/hinder your chances at all, though.

Don’t we all…
